    Buil-in modem not available

    About two weeks ago, I did upgrade from Karmic to Lucid Lynx; no big issues, I managed to restore all video and sound features. The only remaining issue is that I cannot find the way to make use of the built-in modem on my laptop, which I use as a FAX (I know... old tech, but still useful).

    Running on a Toshiba Satellite, I miss the hardware drivers activation panel.

    Ideas, please!

    From your kickoff-menu (the "K" in the bottom Left by default)
    Applications -> System -> Hardware Drivers

    That is what I would assume you mean by the "hardware drivers activation panel"?

    If it's not there, install it:
    sudo apt-get install jockey-kde


    If that doesn't fix the problem, please post the make/model of your modem.

      You do assume correctly, but I see not that Hardware settings, even though I have successfully installed the jockey-kde.
      Maybe I am looking wrong.... What I was looking for, was the small panel that allows me to activate the internal modem and the monitor driver of my Toshiba laptop.

        Could you run the following commands in Konsole and post the output:
        lspci
        lsmod

        It will help determine what modem you have and possibly if the drivers/modules are already present

            Hmmm.... I don't seem to see one listed in lspci or lsmod.... I could just be blind though.

            I haven't set up a modem in Linux in about 12 years, and it was a hardware modem, not a software modem and things have changed quite a bit since then

            I would suggest following the following guide to figuring out which card you have and how to get it working:

                My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A-110. It's a Centrino dual core. The built-in modem is an SmartLink.

                To my surprise, I uninstalled the jockey-kde, installed again and now it appears, but it does not appear as part of the System Settings

                  A 'soft(ware)' modem. These are not very well supported in Linux IIRC. But, a Google search on Toshiba smartlink modem found this: Smartlink modem on linux 2.6... I'm not saying that these steps will resolve your problem, but it is at least a good place to start narrowing the problem down.

                  Did you have this modem working in Karmic 'out of the box,' or did you have to install anything to get it recognized and configured?

                    Oops! Almost forgot. The answer is yes. I had that modem working on Karmic out of the box.
