<DUMMY FIGURED IT OUT> DVD drive not working with Lucid - works OK on Karmic

My DVD-ROM works perfectly with Karmic. My Lucid install has some weird issues.

I can open and close the drive with the eject command
I can mount a DVD and view the files with dolphin and copy a file from it
I cannot play a DVD movie
I cannot rip a DVD movie

    dmesg shows

    Code:
Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 1855975
    [ 1183.229187] sr 4:0:1:0: [sr0] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE
    [ 1183.229193] sr 4:0:1:0: [sr0] Sense Key : Illegal Request [current]
[ 1183.229199] sr 4:0:1:0: [sr0] Add. Sense: Read of scrambled sector without authentication
    [ 1183.229207] sr 4:0:1:0: [sr0] CDB: Read(10): 28 00 00 1c 51 e6 00 00 02 00
    [ 1183.229218] end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 7423896
    [ 1183.229223] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 1855974
    [ 1183.229228] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 1855975
over and over again on all sector numbers.

I have tried editing fstab and adding the device line from Karmic. This made it behave differently, but still not work. Before DVDrip simply wouldn't rip the vob's, after the above change DVDrip woudln't even read the title track.

There's a similar bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ev/+bug/562092 but it points to a udev issue that has already been fixed (supposedly)

Note this part of the errors above

Sense Key : Illegal Request [current]
Add. Sense: Read of scrambled sector without authentication

Look at it in a positive light -- now you know what not installing libdvdcss2 looks like, so you can now recognize the problem when you see it again!
