9.10 and 10.04 Overheating AMD CPU

I first noticed an overheating problem with buntus with 9.10 but figured it was just a problem with dust. Repeated cleanings of the heatsink didn’t solve the problem though. Before 9.10 the CPU usually ran at between 95 F and 115 F. After installing 9.10 the CPU ran at between 120 F and 130 F. And sometimes as high as 140 F.

I have a desktop computer I built myself with an AMD Athlon 1.2 Ghz CPU and an ATI ALL-IN-WONDER 128 PRO Video card. I’ve read threads on this problem and it seems to happen more to laptops then desktops. The threads seem to think it’s a problem/bug in the newer kernels but no one seems to have a fix for it.

I looked up the max temp for my CPU and it’s 90 C which = 194 F so it’s not running anywhere near the max temp yet.

Does anyone know of a software fix or do I need to upgrade my hardware? Thanks for any help.

Is your fan turning on when it gets too high?

I have a desktop so when the computer is on all the fans are on until I turn the computer off. I have one fan in the front of the case one fan on the heatsink of the CPU and two fans on the back of the case. The fan on the front pulls air in and the fans on the back suck air out of the case.

        Hi!
I am using athcool utility for reduce CPU temperature (AthlonXP) for loooooong time...
I dont' know if it supports your CPU, but I thing that Yes. It cools some chipsets too, good utility. 8)

        sudo apt-get install athcool ## Download/Install
sudo athcool on ## Turn cooling ON
sudo athcool stat ## Show status

I have the second command in my "/etc/rc.local" to start cooling with Hardy & Lucid starts.

Have you checked to be sure the fins on the CPU are clear of dust, and that the heat conductive goop between the CPU body and the fin chassis is good, and not dried out and/or cracked?

IX I’d be afraid to use athcool. Synaptic has this warning in it:

            !!!WARNING!!!
Depending on your motherboard and/or hardware components, enabling
            Athlon powersaving mode sometimes causes:

            * noisy or distorted sound playback,
            * a slowdown in harddisk performance,
            * system locks or instability,
            * massive corruption of the filesystem (observed at least once).

If you met those problems, you should not use athcool. Please use
            athcool AT YOUR OWN RISK.

GrayGeek I’ve cleaned the heatsink with rubbing alcohol but I haven’t pulled the CPU out to check the thermal paste. From the other threads I’ve read about the overheating problem it seems to happen more often in laptops and older desktops. May be I just need to upgrade my hardware.

Despite how much I like buntus better than any of the other distros there are times I wish they didn’t have to be as much on the cutting edge as they are.

first off if you have "cool and quite" on in your bios disable it and see if that makes any differance.
then check your thermal compound, i recommend cleaning it and replaceing it , don't use to much cause that will cause a heat problem , a thin even layer is best. the diff on my machine was from 140F to 113F just from changing the paste to a newer non silicon based compound, it now has artic silver 5,but for the athlon Xp your gonna want a ceramic paste since its electicly non conductive and your proc has exposed resistors. not that you need to coat them but just incase. also be sure that your cooling fan is properly rated for your cpu.

Thanks for the tip about the ceramic paste. Are you sure I can't use artic silver 5? I've heard a lot of good things about that paste.

Re: 9.10 and 10.04 Overheating AMD CPU

artic silver 5 is electricly conductive.so if your chip has some any contact points exposed in the area that gets coated you have just shorted out your cpu. besides their ceramic paste is also very good.
