Restricted desktop effects with Radeon 4500?

I am really new to Kubuntu, and not even sure whether this is the right forum for this question.
So please be patient with me...

There seem to be quite a number of nice desktop effects in Kubuntu 10.04.
    BUT:
I cant activate only some of them, for example "Fall apart" or "Magic lamp".

Others does not work: When I try to enable "Explosion" the KDE Windows manager tells me "The following effects could not be activated: Explosion". Unfortunately not a hint about the reason or what to do about it.

The effect "snow" does not give any warning message - but I could detect any effect either (no snow falling on my screen )?

Maybe my graphic card (Radeon 4500 series) is not powerful enough?
Or is there anything I am doing wrong? Conflict between different effects maybe?

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance!!

I can tell you, that yes, it is a graphics card capabilities issue. That isn't to say that your graphics card isn't capable - I have no experience with your card. Others here in KFN do, so monitor this thread.

not sure why you can't enable magic lamp , but some plugins do not work w/ my ati card. (mainly fall apart or explosion forget what one of the two ) never had an issue w/ snow. what driver are you using for your card?

Re: Restricted desktop effects with Radeon 4500?

Sorry for having been unclear before:

I CAN enable "magic lamp", "fall apart"
I CANNOT enable "explosion" (get failure message).
I SEEM to be able to enable "snow" (no failure message), but-no snow (could not detect any effect at all).

I have not installed any special driver. I only installed Kubuntu from scratch as it came.
Maybe I need a more specialised driver for my GPU? Where do I get that one, and how to install?

Thanks for your help & suggestions...!

PS: I read a lot about "Compiz" making a huge number of effects available. Any comments? How would that one work with Kubuntu 10.04 and my video card.....

          I have a Mobility Radeon 4570 and i can't activate explosion either.
Fall apart and Magic Lamp work., wobbly windows is also ok (i really like that effect btw)
          Haven't tried snow yet.
It doesn't matter if the ATI driver is installed or not, some effects just can't be activated

for snow have you tried to use the hotkey to enable snow after you enable the plugin . since snow does not run all the time only when u show it .. check its setting for the hotkey combo.

Did not think about that actually. But tested of course.
The hotkey according to the snow-effect-setting is "meta+ctrl+F12".
As I have no idea what the "meta" key might be I tried some combinations like
              FN+CTRL+F12, Shift+CTRL+F12, "Windowskey"+CTRL+F12 and at last
              ALT+CTRL+F12

The last one I realised I should better not have tried:
After ALT+CTRL+F12 the screen got all black with a little blinking underscore in the upper left corner. I did not find any way back from there, so I just switched the computer off and turned it on again.......

              So....where's the meta key?
And what does the kombination ALT+CTRL+F12 mean.......?

BTW: All the other key-combinations I mentioned did not give any effect whatsoever, as far as I could observe.

the "meta" key is generally your windows key.

btw , ctrl+alt + F1-12 will attempt to put you in to a tty , use ctrl+alt+f7 to get back to the gui (since the gui starts in 7) the other F1-F6 will put your at a tty 8-12 is nothing

try to change that shortcut to something a bit. ezer to try. and try again
