I am still having the problem of slow benchmarks with glxgears. I am wondering if the problem is my resolution (1920x1080). Perhaps it's a bit much for this old card?

Yes, depending on the GPU clock speed and memory on your card, that is pushing it. I assume you're running it on a nice big LCD display, which was not even available for retail consumers when your card was originally designed. Get a GTX-470 and I'm sure the gears will fly for you.

What are you gtkperf results?

I get 4.00 in Karmic and after some tweaking am up (down) to 4.3 in lucid.

Before tweaks was 5.1 in Lucid

Use "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver version (173)" instead of "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver version current [Recommended]"

That's the driver version I have.

I used to have a choppy desktop graphics & screen saver, downgrading to previous driver solved the problem.

I'm getting some NVRM xid crashes with the newest driver. If the .24 version doesn't fix it, I'll try the downgrade.
