Nvidia Geforce 8400GS Problems

I was reading another thread about someone who had this card while testing the 10.04 beta and they said they were getting bad benchmarks with glxgears (something like 500 Frames per 5 seconds). I am getting the same performance and was wondering if anyone else can confirm. Is there some configuration we are missing or is this card just that slow? I am getting:

302 frames in 5.0 seconds
301 frames in 5.0 seconds
301 frames in 5.0 seconds

And this is not even in full screen mode and is with compositing turned off.

I have Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT.

When I start my computer everything seems to be fine, after a while though the graphics are no longer smooth.
The graphics seems to chip, video playback is smooth but for example the desktop effects & screen savers are not smooth.

I'm getting the same numbers now.

I was getting 38,000 now 300.

Something changed in the last two weeks

have you guys done a clean install or upgrade.
in both cases.. if so... are the driver for nVidia GeForce displayed in System->hardware drivers

i had urge to upgrade to lucid.. but i am holding back.. because i installed kubuntu in VM. and it is not showing the drivers for nVidia.. neither for the STA brodcom wifi. the two things without which i cant even think of upgrading..

apart from that.. really nice distro.. will take few days for a smooth distro.

Sorry, - edit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and add

blacklist nouveau
blacklist nvidiafb


at the end.

The card itself should not be that slow. I'm a Nvidia 8400GS user , and below are my first 10 glxgear results. This is a 512mb nvidia card though, manufactured by MSI. I don't know if that makes a difference or not but thought I'd better mention that.
Here are my glxgears results:
7409 frames in 5.0 seconds
6884 frames in 5.0 seconds
10726 frames in 5.0 seconds
10884 frames in 5.0 seconds
9376 frames in 5.0 seconds
9106 frames in 5.0 seconds
8240 frames in 5.0 seconds
10256 frames in 5.0 seconds
10513 frames in 5.0 seconds
9318 frames in 5.0 seconds

I'm running a 1600x900 screen resolution, 3D effects enabled, KDE desktop etc, so there is definitely something wrong with your results. Tips: The 173 nvidia proprietary drivers were not working good for me (very sluggish) in Kubuntu 10.04, so I am using the 195.36.15 (aka "current") which works much better. I also reverted back to ext3 because ext4 made things slower in some areas (especially dpkg).

I closed firefox and stopped dropbox and akregator and now my glxgear results are 3 times better. (I wasn't thinking before lol)

From what i've read KMS interfears with glxgears and it sucks as a benchmark anyway. Install gtkperf package and use that to test your performance.

Here's my 8400 GS with Firefox running....also all graphics effects active in KDE....

Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.

I have a 8400GS and a 1920x1200 screen and with desktop effects I get only 500 fps fullscreen with glxgears (and 700 or so w/o effects). I also use the 195 Nvidia driver. For some reason it's just not really flying. So I'm not the only one with this issue! By the way the gtkperf time for 100 rounds is 6.3 seconds.

Also, the problem hasn't been fixed that you need to manually re-install the nvidia driver after each kernel update rather than the system doing that automatically.

If you have dkms installed, it is supposed to recompile everything automagically whenever a new kernel is installed

My gtkperf in Karmic is 4.00 and Lucid 5.41 so it's definitely slower now. Must be due to the xorg server version.

At this point - I haven't noticed much difference in my desktop performance but it might show up after I get my games installed!
