(SOLVED) Is Kubuntu LTS Software Upgraded Over the 3 Years?

Is it still true that if I install the LTS version of Kubuntu that I'll be stuck with the versions of software that it comes with? Or, will the versions of the software it comes with be updated during the three years it's good for?

I'd prefer using the 10.04 LTS version but not if I'll be stuck with software I can't upgrade. Thanks for any help.

LTS means Long Term Support. That's not just limited to security updates and such. The software will be upgraded as well.

    April 29th. Don't get 10.04 until then.

Are we really talking about more than bugfix/security updates here? That wasn't the case before, IIRC. Was always rummaging around on getdeb.net and Sourceforge pages to get a current Audacity or Rosegarden or Pidgin or whatever.

          Ubuntu (8.04)

          > Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS released

          ...
We also committed, for the first time, to a regular set of point releases for 8.04 LTS. These will start three months after the LTS, and be repeated every six months until the next LTS is out. These point releases will include support for new hardware as well as rolling up all the updates published in that series to date. So a fresh install of a point release will work on newer hardware and will also not require a big download of additional updates.

          >> Kubuntu PPAs:
          Utilizing Kubuntu's PPA Repositories

While Ubuntu does have a wide selection of software in their official apt repositories, as well as what is available in the official (but unsupported) Backports repository, providing packages for newer KDE SC versions (as well as some major applications) is often beyond the scope of these official software channels.

This is why Kubuntu use the Ubuntu PPA system for their KDE technology upgrades...

          >> Kubuntu and it’s Repositories:
Even though Kubuntu shares quite a lot with it’s older sibling, there are obviously enough differences between the two distros that Kubuntu use Ubuntu’s PPA system for a large portion of it’s updates. There are myriad reasons for this, but basically it boils down to these concepts:
          • New versions of software are not available in the standard repositories
          • KDE release new software that often provide new features and fixes
          • These new packages might need some testing before they are hopefully made available in Ubuntu’s Backports
          • Many Kubuntu users enjoy having the latest and greatest bits available to them

          ...

          > Kubuntu Updates Policy:
...Lucid will be an LTS release. We want it to be well supported for the full three years and maximizing our use of upstream's bugfix work is part of that. Starting to exercise the process with Karmic will help ensure this goes well. Having packages provided via -updates for LTS will be helpful for ISO respins at point releases.
          ...
-updates is promised to be regression free. First, microversion updates will be uploaded to a PPA and tested. Additionally, upstream bug reports and svn commits will be monitored for signs of regression. If regressions are detected, they will be resolved before moving forward. Once PPA testing is satisfactory, the packages will move to -proposed and the testing process will continue with a broader audience. Once testing is complete and the packages are sufficiently aged, they will be copied to -updates....

Thanks very much for the help rfakhrai, vinnywright, abalone and Rog131. Ok, so I already have Kubuntu 9.10 installed so I suppose I could take a risk and try upgrading it to Kubuntu 10.04 LTS but I think it would be a lot safer to just do a clean install of Kubuntu 10.04 LTS. This is going to be fantastic! Thanks again for your help.

Re: (SOLVED) Is Kubuntu LTS Software Upgraded Over the 3 Years?

              I've upgraded from 8.04>8.10>9.04>9.10.

It's definitely time for a fresh install; and I'm honored that it'll be Lucid Lynx.

              Can't wait until tomorrow.

On the drive I had Xubuntu 9.10 on I did a clean install of Kubuntu 10.04 LTS with a CD but on the drive I had Kubuntu 9.10 on I upgraded to Kubuntu 10.04 LTS online. Both are working perfectly. I'm really looking forward to seeing how this works out over the next 3 years.

Re: (SOLVED) Is Kubuntu LTS Software Upgraded Over the 3 Years?

Now let's get the facts straight on LTS

Ubuntu's LTS status does only apply to security and some serious bug fixes for 3 years. YOU WILL NOT NORMALLY GET NEW SOFTWARE VERSIONS , just security fixes to existing software.

Now, all is NOT lost, mind you. Not at all. Remeber, Kubuntu is not Ubuntu

Ubuntu have various options and repository components that provide what you are looking for, and Kubuntu have a few things of their own.
                  • New Releases - you get new stuff all around every six months, and each new release has 18 months of support
                  • Backports - this is where newer packages from an upcoming release is rebuilt for the current version. These packages have no formal, official support, however. Some new KDE releases do make mit here
                  • PPA packages These are where the goodly Kubuntu developers package up fresh, shiny new KDE stuff for us, from bleeding edge alphas and betas, to fresh final releases of KDE SC

I have a blog post on this that is intended to clear up the choices, hopefully
