    First impressions of 10.04

Well, I finally took the plunge! Downloaded the alternate CD but did an upgrade over the internet (keeping the CD in case it all went pear-shaped) but the upgrade was pretty much without issue.

Everything seems fine (although I did need to reinstall the kde panel). I don't use any kde pim applications so haven't enabled akonadi. I'm going to give nepomuk and strigi a go - does anyone have any views how well this works?

One observation I immediately made is that bootup doesn't seem to be very much quicker than with Karmic - which I find a bit disappointing in view of all the hype.

On the plus side, however, it does seem pretty stable and it's nice to have all the up to date software.

load avrage's as reported by top never drop below 0.20 with it runing and system idol ......with it off that drops to 0.02 - 0.00 with the system idol .

and sence "locate" works so well and over the hole system instaed of just the DIR's you point it to for indexing .........well I turned it off

      So did I, Vinneywright!

Locate & updatedb (which cron runs periodically and which I can execute manually if need be) works perfectly for me.

Agreed, also kfind is good for a gui interface and searches content as well. The lack of a decent gui search app for neopmuk (Dolphin doesn't count!) is a negative mark as well.

I see nepomuk as a work in progress and not terribly useful at the moment. Where I see it being really good is perhaps for the non geeks using rich content - such as my wife who does a lot of document writing. A full text context sensitive content search integrated in KDE would be awesome for her.

          Re: First impressions of 10.04

My first impression was very good -- excellent even. Lately things have slowed down just a tad (including boot) but certainly still very good -- especially compared to 9.10. I have old hardware (Dell Latitude C610 and Dell Inspiron 8200, both are laptops) and KDE4 has presented a few challenges in the past (KDE3 does fine). But with few exceptions it runs very well considering 'antiquated' hardware and should just scream on a more modern system -- I'm overdue for a hardware upgrade.

I guess what I really like, although it does seem hardware dependent as this feature is only visible on my P4 Inspiron and not on my P-III Latitude, is how the windows are grouped with tabs at the top. This makes for a very organized display but also allows me to move a window to another group should I need two views of separate files in the same application.

Honestly, KDE4 is still too much of a load for very old computers and after testing I will convert to Xfce or even Fluxbox. I still have Debian on here and that's using 3.5.10 but development on KDE3 has stopped and the direction Gnome is moving in will take more modern resources as well. Certainly not a complaint -- not by any means. But it is also good that the "bare-bones" desktop environments and window managers are still being developed for the more Spartan.

          Nice job!

It seems to have gone quiet on the strigi front now, it must have stopped indexing - in fact launching the GUI for it shows the strigi daemon to be idle.

Whilst I'm not sure how often I'll use it, the search function looks pretty good - seems to be heading in the right direction

An app that has a pretty good GUI search feature is Kate.

I downloaded the FOIA.ZIP file that was released by the CRU whistle blower concerning global warming research. The "mail" subdirectory had 1,037 emails (IIRCC) in it. I opened Kate and then select all the emails. The first email selected opened in the left right panel. I did a "search all files" for various names and comments. The panel on the right splits into two panels, the bottom one containing the number of matches, one per line. click on a line and its file opens in the top right panel to the line containing the search term. cut & paste, rinse, spin, repeat...

the prob. I had with it wasent the initial indexing (I expected that to take a bit) but that it keeps poling the system at set intervalls (it seams) and way to often in my opinun .....it seamed like every 15 min or so it was reruning or poling or whatever it was doing.........and that was what was keeping the load avrage's up somewhat.

all that sead it dose do a good seartch and farley quick to
