I searched the whole forum, the latest post found in the search was November 2008, so forgive me if I missed a post when doing the search.

I am not pleased with the Amarok player, so I sought out a different player to use. I am a big fan of XMMS 1.2.10, but that is not offered. I searched the repositories, and, using Synaptic, I installed everything that said 'XMMS2', so I have every possible thing installed. I have Promoe, the GUI front end for XMMS2. No worky. I have Esperanza, that also doesn't play anything, either. To be certain the files were good, I installed QMMP, and that played the same files properly. Phonon is installed, and alsa as well.

Anyone have any idea? I'm using Kubuntu 10.04 LTS Beta2 for 64 bit Desktop.

The XMMS package can be found from the Dapper repositories > Ubuntu package search (and download) . They could work with the Lucid (not tested).

New (not yet in the official repositories) or old (dropped from the official repositories) can be found from the PPA repositories > FAQ: Repositories

1) libglib1.2ldbl_1.2.10-19build1~ppa1_i386.deb
2) libgtk1.2-common_1.2.10-18.1build2~ppa1_all.deb
3) libgtk1.2_1.2.10-18.1build2~ppa1_i386.deb
4) xmms_1.2.11-1~ppa1_i386.deb

Alt + F2 and xmms - seems to work




XMMS2

Installing about 18 xmms2 packages. The Esperanza is telling that everything is fine but it doesn't work - it doesn't import directories or mp3 files.

Purging the XMMS2 from the system as there are lot of options that are working by simply installing them.

I, too, was a big fan of xmms1. Xmms2 is really not simply an update of xmms. It is a very different program with a different philosophy. I suspect that you will be disappointed by it.

I was originally dragged kicking and screaming to Amarok. Now, I can't live without it. Try it, you may like it. If not, there are several other audio players available in the repositories.

My sentiments, exactly, from using Amarok, learned that Amarok is chasing a different audience than myself.

As for discussion of XMMS2, I recall concluding that the devs clearly stated (well, from what I understood) that XMMS2 was going to become a subsystem for media control, and that they were leaving the user interface up to other developers. Just figured that if any distro would get XMMS2 working, Ubuntu would be the one.

In regards XMMS1, I see that the support is getting more and more sidelined away from Canonical. Rog131 - that looks like an excellent how-to, I might yet try it.

For now, I guess I'll learn to like QMMP - looks like XMMS1/Early Winamp, accepts WinAmp 2.X skins, etc.



In any event, I'm still curious about the original reason for my post - why XMMS2 does nothing as installed on my system, had thought this was a fluke, but nobody posted that they use XMMS2, so maybe nobody uises XMMS2?

From a konsole, I launched Promoe, clicked play on a track that was listed from the last time I tried Promoe (the track is still present), and after seeing the "no connection to ibus-daemon" portion, I then quit promoe:

You might also like Audacious. It's a fork of BMP which is a fork of XMMS.
