[Beta 2] Plymouth and Fn-Key problem

    Greetings,

I upgraded to Lucid beta 2 today (with all the latest updates as well) and I encountered several problems which google couldn't help me.

    - Boot up is very slow: prompt is filled with "mountall: Plymouth command failed"
    - Plymouth splash screen graphic is like an 8-bit picture.
    - Kwin desktop effect have to enable manually everytime.
    - My brightness Fn-key doesnt work anymore (HP Probook), the changelog said HAL removal but i still can see HAL is the only one in the backend for power manager.

Hope you can shed some lights into these matter.

    Thanks

Re: [Beta 2] Plymouth and Fn-Key problem

The Lucid is still a beta:

    > Technical Overview
Note: This is a beta release. Do not install it on production machines. The final stable version will be released on April 29, 2010.
    > Lucid Lynx Beta2 Kubuntu
NOTE: This is a beta (pre-) release. Pre-release versions of Lucid are NOT encouraged for anyone needing a stable system or for anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even frequent, breakage. Pre-release versions ARE recommended for Kubuntu developers and those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing bugs.' Please do not use this in a production environment with data or workflows that you cannot do without
    - Boot up is very slow: prompt is filled with "mountall: Plymouth command failed"
The Plymouth is depending you hardware (ATI Radeon Mobility 4330 ?) and you drivers - here the plymouth is smooth (old ATI - opensource drivers) after the upgrade of the plymouth to the 0.8.2-1.

    - Kwin desktop effect have to enable manually everytime.
Check that the kwin setting files are owned by you:
    Code:
    ls -l ~/.kde/share/config/kwin*
What effects do you have on ?
Some of the effects may need the propierty fglrx driver.

Turn the effects off one by one and check if the desktop effects are on at the next log in.

Maybe reset of the KDE desktop to the default settings ( > Topic: Plasma, plasmoids and short how to recover) will help.

the changelog said HAL removal but i still can see HAL is the only one in the backend for power manager.

Re: Just did a clean reinstall to alpha3, hal is still installed.
HAL is still installed, but it's no longer initialized on boot; it's now activated via D-Bus (org.freedesktop.Hal.service) only if an application that still relies on it demands it.

As for the Technical Overview (which is where "full removal" is mentioned; not the release notes), like Ubuntu itself, it's not put together by "Canonical folks", but many volunteers as well. If you want to make sure it's up to date and reflects facts as closely as possible, you can edit https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidLynx/TechnicalOverview (make sure you only touch parts where know what you're dealing with, and comment your changes). Joining the #ubuntu-release channel on freenode and announcing the parts you intend to help with would help coordinate the effort.

Re: [Beta 2] Plymouth and Fn-Key problem

      Many Thanks Rog131,

I have ATI Mobility Radeon 4330; both radeon and fglrx driver will result in low graphic plymouth. I am currently using fglrx. So am I out of luck with plymouth?

The kwin settings files are owned by me. I already wiped out all my plasma config and start a new one since upgrade to lucid.

Let me check with you again to ensure my full understanding:
      - mountall problem: it is a bug and we can do nothing about it at the moment?
      - hal is messed up on my system: fn key isn't functioning anymore despite xev produces feedback.

Hmm - i think that the opensource (radeon) should support the KMS and the Plymouth.
        > Plymouth (oh no!) and ATI/FGLRX. NoCanDo, Really?

You could look a solution and share it.

Maybe > Brightness Controls Still Don't Work.
It is with the nVidia GeForce - does the fglrx support the xorg.conf "Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"" ??

          Thanks once again.

I waltz through google searches as well as tried your suggestion, but no good / concrete solution found. Think I will just lay and wait for the updates
