    StartX / login trouble

    I have a problem with not being able to log in. When I try to log in at previous/default mode the screen goes black (pointer showing) and in failsafe I'm being kicked back to log in screen. I tried to remove .kde folder since I thought it was a DE issue but it didn't solve my problem.
    From terminal startx give me the same black screen.

    Graphic chip in signature - thus using the open driver.

    Help appreciated

    Re: StartX / login trouble

    2 things to try....

    1- at login switch to a tty ctrl>alt>F1 then login and do
    Code:
    df -h
    and see if the disk is geting full.

    you can get behavyer like this if /home is geting full (if you have a sepret /home partition) or if no seprat /home... /is geting full.

    2- after checking disk space (if not full)add a new user
    Code:
    sudo adduser name
    name can be whatever you want........it will ask you some queshtons and for a password after adding a new user log out of the text console (exit) and ctrl>alt>F7 then try to login to the new acct.

    this will tell wether it's just something borked in your acct. or system wide.

      Re: StartX / login trouble

      The video chips of the R520 series (Pro 1950) have been moved to the legacy series. The current 9.3 version of Catalyst does not drive it. I suspect that the current version of the Radeon driver in the repository also does not support the R520.

      I was asked to install Kubuntu on a laptop which had a Radeon 9700 chip in it and found that when I tried to installed the 9.3 Catalyst it said it didn't support that chip. Trying to install the 8.2 Catalyst it reported an incompatible kernel. Catch-22.

      What I did was boot the LiveCD of PCLinuxOS 2010 beta, run drakeX (or is it XDrake, I can't remember) and created an xorg.conf using the Radeon driver which gave me 3D acceleration. I copied the xorg.conf onto a USB stick and transfered it to that laptop, and the ATI Radeon 9700 came up fine, with 3D acceleration.

      This is why I suggested on the Kubuntu Brainshare website that Kubuntu MM 10.10 have an app that allows the creation of a viable xorg.conf file if upstart, HAL or udev fail to create a suitable driver.

        Re: StartX / login trouble

        Sorry for the late reply I have been busy and haven't had time to look in to this deeper, and thank you for your replies

        @Vinny
        I added a new user but the problem is still there with the other user
        I haven't checked disk space but I don't have a seperate /home partition (haven't bothered yet since this is still a bug partition system-once LL RC comes I'll clean out the whole HD and add all essentials- now there hasn't been the time)

        @GG
        When I looked further into X I think that the graphic chip is killing it, driver wise, I may be wrong here tho but do I mix them up when I say that catalyst is the propriety driver? :S I've been using the open driver all the time.

        when I try to start plasma-desktop I get this error, which could be the core of my problem ..

        KUniqueApplication: Cannot find the D-bus server "/bin/dbus-launch terminated abnormally with the following error: Autolaunch error: X11 initialization failed.

        searching the net I get several hits on this (similar) problem .. not sure how to interpret it though :S

          Perhaps reinstalling dbus and dbus-x11 may help...
