I just installed 10.04 on an Aspire 5517 laptop and Wicd does not see the wireless card or any networks, but network manager does see all the networks and I can logon with it, but I want to use wicd for easy access at coffee shops, how can I get wicd to use the wireless, can someone help me. thanks

Did you try System Settings -> Advanced [Tab]... Hardware: Network Manager Backend and move wicd up the list to first position? (No idea if this actually will help, but worth a shot).
As an alternative, you could also try removing networkmanager, but that might have some consequences for you that are negative... might want to wait for more comments before trying that... I forget if it is necessary, but in the past I always got rid of it when using wicd (I think).
