KDE fails to start from KDM

I updated my laptop's 9.10 Karmic install two weeks ago to 10.04, as my work computer had been working fine with 10.04. However, now the laptop will boot into the KDM login page, but if I log into KDE, the splash screen fails just as the second idon (the wrench and the screwdriver) are coming up. I thought that my custom KDM and spash screens (from kde-look.org) might have been causing problems. I tried opening the system settings application from gnome, but the Login Manager applet fails saying:

"Cannot load library /usr/lib/kde4/kcm_kdm.so (/usr/lib/libGL.so.1: undefined stmbol: _nv000009gl)"

For good measure, I renamed my .kde directory to get rid of any old setting, but that did not work, and I moved the old .kde folder back. I even tried switching to GDM, thinking bypassing KDM on my way to KDE might help, but no luck.

I originally installed 9.10 on this laptop, and later installed kde 4.4 from the 9.10 ppa archive. I updated to 10.04 from this 9.10 KDE 4.4. Could my problem with the library and the Login Manager applet be a result of this? How could this be fixed? Any suggestions would be appreciated. =)

Re: KDE fails to start from KDM

I have been doing updates on a regular basis, both from terminal and gnome...this computer has gnome (ubuntu-desktop) also installed. I guess gnome is OK, but it is even more annoying now that Canonical decded to move the min/max/close buttons.

In two weeks of updates, the behavior of KDE on startup has been the same, crashing on the second icon of the splash screen.

Re: KDE fails to start from KDM - maybe solved

I reinstalled several of the kcm packages, although that did not see to work. My eventual solution appeared to completely remove all the proprietary nvidia binary packages and start nouveau with "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg-nouveau"...

Now the original splash screen (while booting up) is finally high resolution. I am also booting past the wrench and screwdriver in KDE's splashscreen into KDE...

I had the same problem with a laptop, and haven't had time to look into it until today.

Thanks a million for posting your experience because the same fix worked for me. Had I not seen your post, it would have taken me a lot longer to figure out the issue.
