I have this ultra-cheap Hercules eCafé 900B netbook and today I decided to install 10.04 netbook edition on it, the daily build of 2010/03/30 (today).
I had some bad experience with this particular machine before so I tried to run Kubuntu 10.04 first.
To my great relief and satisfaction, a beautiful desktop appeared before my eyes, in the correct resolution with sound enabled, the track pad working, etc.
So, then I installed the thing on the internal HD (120GB /dev/sda). I gave it the whole disk, none of that dual-boot nonsense, the Mandriva stuff that it came with was only polluting the computer.
The problem now is that the poor little thing doesn't even give me the Grub2 boot loader after a successful installation.
Since everything runs fine from an USB live drive, I'm thinking that maybe it has something to do with a graphical slash boot (or something like that) when it boots from the internal HD. I know this machine has an el-cheapo GFX card and that might be an issue.
I can't think of any other reason why it would boot perfectly from an exterior USB thumb drive and not from an internal IDE HD.
Any other ideas are welcome. I'm more than happy to debug this one a bit and provide feedback.
Cheers,
Matt
