is there a way to upgrade from 9.10 from the CLI?

    is there a way to upgrade from 9.10 from the CLI?

    what are the repos and suggested procedure to upgrade from 9.04 via apt-get or aptitude? After a routine upgrade my 9.04 install ended up with no X (a bug that seemingly nobody has been able to come up with a solution yet) and after some fiddling with it I think that upgrading to lucid might be less of a hassle than trying to fix the current install.

    Actually I am not 100% sure if it was the X problem or some filesystem damage resulting in the corruption of some related file because a few minutes after finishing the upgrade and rebooting with the new kernel the filesystem went into ro mode and I had to boot into recovery mode and run fsck, which ended up with some files in lost+found.

    I dont think it's recomended to go 2 steps (9.04 to 10.04.....skiping9.10) ..................BUT it's "update-notifier-kde -d" basicley you alt>F2 and type that in the box......withought the quotes

    however if the problem is some config it may be preserved in the upgrade and still no x

    you may want to consider a fresh install!!

      sorry the installed version is 9.10 (karmic), and it was perfectly functional until the last upgrade. Anyways since X is not running I cannot use KDE. I am left to the command line. I guess that probably all I need is the repos urls.

        I am not totally sure, so go slowly and be prepared for someone else to come along with a correct answer.

        You can get to your sources list, using the cli, by using the command:
        sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
        Then you could use Nano to edit the sources list by changing karmic to lucid. Save Nano. Exit Nano.

        Then use the commands:
        sudo apt-get update
        sudo apt-get upgrade
        sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

          I went through those steps already. Problem is that the repos on my sources list are for karmic and I need the lucid ones. I might get them by downloading one of the CDs but it would be best if I can avoid downloading it.

            If you use Nano to change every karmic to lucid you are changing the repositories.

            But, you are going to end up downloading the replacement.

            If you can you might be better to download and burn an ISO

              Last week I upgraded my wife's Acer 3004Li laptop from the CLI using "update-notifier-kde -d" and it came out just fine.

                no X -> no GUI -> no KDE -> no update-notifier-kde. All I can use is apt-get and aptitude. I am not sure there's a lucid release repo (just to name one) since lucid is still in beta phase. I'll check the repos via web as see what I can find. Thank you anyways. If someone has lucid installed can you please paste here the content of your /etc/apt/sources.list ?? that might do just fine. It is few-lines text file.

                    I think if you just change all the refrences of karmic to lucid in your sources.list it would do but hear you go.

                      Well, what I did was check on repos via its web interface, changed every occurrence of karmic to lucid then do the usual apt-get update - apt-get dist-upgrade and it did it, not without a few hiccups like a .deb file that seemingly got corrupted and I had to restart the upgrade a couple of times. It left me with what seemed a totally black theme, but after removing all the nvidia drivers that it had installed during the upgrade and replacing it by the nvidia propietary driver that I'd been using all along I got the desktop back, excepting for the panel, which I had to add along with the widgets. So far everything's going fine and it even kept my pulseaudio configuration.
