    915GM/GMS/910GML "tearing/scrambling/blanking"

This seems to happen only on resume from suspend and not right away and not every time but notably when using firefox:
the screen will flicker/tear... and at some point later go blank, but not dark, just light blue/white. The only way to get the screen back is to close the lid, let it suspend, then resume it again.

I know this is in testing, so no biggie. I just wondered if anyone else noticed it. It happened in another release a few back, and it was with the intel driver.

EDIT: This happens with compositing on or off.

While the recent updates to the Intel video driver has significantly improved the performance of my GM45 chip, I have also noticed a tendency for the screen to flicker every so often, especially when running FireFox. Specifically, the panel at the bottom will, for a fraction of a second, become a thin line about 1/16th of in inch tall. A horizontal flickering "tear", about 1/3rd up from the bottom of my 1600 X 900 screen, also occurs every so often. I never lose my display, nothing goes blank. Just the flickers.

        Thanks for replying.

I don't have problems until I resume from suspend. If I "hibernate" the computer, I don't have any issues.

It seems to be getting better. It still happens and it is bad when it does, but it just is not as frequent.

Is it just me or could this be related to what I posted in http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...pic=3110792.0? The first machine has ATI and this one nVidia but the common denominator is Firefox.

I generally don't get a crash where I get dumped back to the login screen. If the screen does go blank, I am still logged in. Closing the lid/suspending brings up the screen again. something about waking from suspend makes my video unstabe. Sometimes when the screen tears and flickers (usually it syncs with mouse keyboard/movement) it settles down and it is usable. It DOES happen more frequently with firefox but I have seen it happen with firefox closed.

Can you get your screen back by using
              Alt+Ctrl+F2
which opens a console, followed by
              Alt+Ctrl+F7
which switches back to the KDE4 desktop?

ctrl alt F2 brings me to the console, but ctrl alt F7 gives me a message listed several times in a row:

                Broken pipe: xxxx

I forget the number. But KDE never came back up.

I did ctrl alt F2 again and it brought me back to the console. I logged in there and did

                sudo init 1

to bring me down to runlevel 1 thinking it would come back up. Plymouth ran its shutdown logo, then it came back to the broken "pipe message."

I did a ctrl alt del to shutdown and it rebooted and it logged me back into kde. (I use auto login to save boot time).

I assume there is an issue somewhere, because you suggest that ctrl alt F7 should bring me back into kde and it does not.

I have not noticed my flickering issue lately. I think I am going to belay further upgrades until 4/30:- )

...or at least I will use clonezilla-live to image my drive before I upgrade. I am happy with what I am seeing as of the last batch of upgrades and have not noticed any quirks.

Personally, I wouldn't belay the updates. If you can bring up a konsole or console you can enter
                  sudo apt-get update
                  sudo apt-get upgrade.

Also, perhaps after Alt+Ctrl+F2 then you could try
                  sudo services kdm restart
to see if it restarts the xserver and brings up your desktop.

I wrote down what the error is:

could not write bytes: broken pipe. I actually see this right before kdm loads the welcome screen. I don't see the plymouth boot graphics as I use an SSD so my thinkpad boots so fast that apparently it is skipped.

I was somewhat joking, as I can't resist to upgrade. Generally if one waits too long, there tend to be conflicts and dependency issues.

I will try that and post back.

                    EDIT:

I forgot the manner in which you suggested (really, I apparently have no short term memory) but I did

                    sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart

And it did bring me back. More or less I just have to remember ctrl alt F2 if my screen blanks. Have not had too much trouble lately though.

                    Thanks for the help.
