    lspci scrambles screen

A couple days ago an update to my LL installation changed the behavior of the lspci command.

Now, when I issue that command in a konsole, the konsole AND my desktop display are immediately converted into an unreadable mess which looks like every window is surround inside and out by thousands of lines in a variety of colors ... sort of posterized and waved at the same time. I can't read any menus or select any options. A power cycle is about the only way out.

Sounds like something went haywire with your video driver, GG. What is your graphics chip?

      GM45, running the i915 driver.

My video, and the acceleration, is running better than ever as far as Stellarium, SecondLife, TuxRacer and the other 3D apps are concerned.

I have noticed a "blinking" or occasional tearing on the display. The blink is so fast as to be almost unnoticeable. The tearing involves the panel at the bottom. Sort of like a jitter. But, no malfunction occurs.

I had something similar happen in a stable version of another distribution. I switched to a TTY (<CTRL+ALT+F2>) and back (<CTRL+ALT+F7>) and that returned my normal view. Something to try, anyway. Also try <CTRL+ALT+BACK> to restart the session or RSEIUB (<ALT+SysRq> + <R>, then <ALT+SysRq> + <E>, etc.) to "nicely" reboot. If those don't work I'll hit <CTRL+ALT+DEL> and hit the power button briefly (shutdown) before I do a hard reset.

I think I read somewhere that RSEIUO will do a shutdown to power off rather than a restart. The mnemonic I've heard is Raising Skinny Elephants Is Utterly Boring for the former so I guess the "O" could be, I don't know, Onerous? ;-)

While the mouse worked, and I could watch a fuzzy patch moving around the fussy desktop, I couldn't do anything with it because I could never determine exactly what it was over. IF I clicked anything the fuzz would change but I couldn't tell where to put the mouse next in order to do anything. Opening another console with hotkeys just gave another fuzzy console. I could do the elephant thing but it was much easier to just push the power button.
