[partially solved.] vmware player and lucid beta-strange stuff

I have vmware player 3.0.1 running fine on Lucid upgraded from alpha to beta with the .16 and .17 kernels.

My beta install on the same machine does not like vmware player 3.0.1 at all. Neither with the .16 nor .17 kernels.

It installs fine but would not compile the headers with a message that the header-generic were missing

So I did this with .16 and .17:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r)
    Now it tells me:
    Unable to build kernel module.

See log file /tmp/vmware-root/setup-1742.log for details.
    which gives this:

so why does the alpha upgraded to beta work with vmware and the beta install does not?

Re: vmware player and lucid beta-strange stuff

I don't understand this one either, Fintan. It happens that I installed 10.04 as an Alpha about 2 weeks before the Beta release, so my working VMware Player 3.0.1 is the sames as yours. It has no problems at all.

    Don't forget to install build-essential.

I suppose you have tried a clean new installation of VMware?

Hey dible good to hear from you again

      Don't forget to install build-essential.
actually I didn't have it installed on either but guess what?

After installing it on my pure beta vmware player built successfully.

Although I am happy with the results it only makes this stranger

I will mark this as partially solved.

The needed gcc files must have been in the Alpha installations, somehow, but not your Beta.
