64bit version of Lucid loads to white screen, apparently with neither WM nor DE

I have installed lucid for the first time on this amd64 machine which has just come back from shop to replace dead data drive.

Immediately after install from CD and before running online updates, KDE worked "sort of". "Sort of" because krunner never worked.

Since running online updates, KDE is unusable. It loads to white screen. There is apparently neither a WM nor a DE. Backed out to a virtual console and installed lubuntu-desktop in order to obtain some functionality from this computer (and in order to file this bug report).

In attempting to work around this problem, deleted ~/.kde to no effect.

Have been running lucid alpha versions on a 32-bit box since a few days after alpha release without untoward incident.

I have filed bugs on this situation at launchpad.net and included two crash reports from /var/crash

I have been breaking alpha and beta software for 28 years and faithfully reporting breakages. Am therefore fully aware of warnings about running pre-production software.

that happens (started to recently.. I'd say that it started with kde 4.4. Seemingly it is a kde (I'd call it lack of defensive programming) problem) when desktop effects are enabled in kde but for some reason (usually a driver problem) 3-d acceleration is not working. You should try to disable desktop effects by editing the kde start up file or to restore your video driver to a full working condition.

from a terminal, after login in do:

    nano ~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc

find the line [Compositing] and change the one below saying "Enabled=true" to "Enabled=false"

save then close nano and you should be able to get on KDE again. Of course you'll have to solve any driver problems that you might have before re-enabling compositing. A quick test is running glxgears from konsole.

Blow out the candles on all my frankensteins.

Your analysis was correct. I tracked down and filed bug reports on problems with "jockey", which is the Ku/Ubuntu utility for installing proprietary video drivers.
