Lucid Alpha 3 (netbook) installer, language and nepomuk problem

    Hi,

I've noticed that the both LL alpha 3 and daily builds (12,13) still have some serious problems:

    1. Installer gives several errors about language & internalization related python files before it starts. And even if it starts, it by-passes the language selection screen and runs directly from locale/date-time selection screen. Yet it installs kubuntu successfully with the default english language files.

    2. After the installation process, everything went fine. Even the Nepomuk & akonadi was working - which was a miracle for me, for I have never seen it working before I went to the system settings/language and attempted to change the system's default language to my native language (turkish/tr). I installed the required language files, and then the qt-language-selector appeared asking me to select the system language from the list. But when I selected the language and clicked the "Set As System Language" button, and guess what? Nothing happened! Then, to see the output, I runned qt-language-selector from the Konsole and I got an error message which states that, in "QtLanguageSelector.py" file line 259 there is an undefined function called "self.setSystemDefaultLanguage(code)". So I examined the above mentioned python file, and found out that setSystemDefaultLanguage() function isn't defined indeed! Given the situation, I have downloaded the gnome's language-selector, and tried to set system language and locale to turkish with it. It worked. But...

    3. After I reboot my system, language was succesfully set to turkish. But this time KDE 4.4 welcomed me with a "Nepomuk Stub" crash -which was working perfectly for the first time! So, I went into the Desktop Search Settings and saw that strigi was disabled and an error stating that "Nepomuk is not registered at D-Bus". Actually this was the only problem I've been experiencing since KK + KDE 4.4. I had tried every solution but nothing had worked. Then I've suspected that it has something to do with language/locale settings. So I played with the language locale settings and found out that the problem was about locale (at least,as an end user, it seems to me so)! When I changed the locale (not the language) to english (GB or USA) it started to work again! I tried this workaround on my desktop KK installation -which I was never successfull in running nepomuk - it worked there too! so I suspect that the notorios nepomuk d-bus error, in some cases, stems from locale changes! I don't know why, but some locales -other than english- crash nepomuk!

Now, I don't know how to file a bug -I'm not experienced in bug reporting. So, if someone can confirm the above mentioned problems and file these as a bug, it will help us a lot.

    Regards.

      Hello vista killer,

I didn't try the Greek language but I can assure you that the nepomuk + d-bus problem which I've encountered is due to system-wide language settings. On both Kubuntu 9.10 (desktop and netbook) & Kubuntu 10.04 (tested only netbook) I get that notorious error if I use certain languages/locales (one of them is Turkish) and If I revert system language back to English, nepomuk + strigi + akonadi work as intended.

Re: Lucid Alpha 3 (netbook) installer, language and nepomuk problem

        Hi,

I habe a problem that maybe is near. I normally use two languages Swedish and English (United States). Normally I use Swedish. I habe problems with nepomuk and virtuoso. Virtuoso is hungry of
processor resources. Sometimes take my processor to 100%, many times to 60, 80 or 90%. I use to
disabled virtuoso. Now I changed to English in my system and all is running fine. So I am thinking that yes, a kind of bug is happening when using another language than english with some process.

Anyone tried the beta1 yet? The notes said nepomuk has matured a lot.

Nope. I'm downloading the beta 1 and still 40% to be downloaded
I hope the above mentioned problems are fixed in beta.

Re: Lucid Alpha 3 (netbook) installer, language and nepomuk problem

Well, I finally downloaded kubuntu lucid lynx netbook beta 1 and my first impression is this: I'm dissapointed

I know this is a beta release and I appreciate the hard work of the developers and packagers, but... the installer, nepomuk and language selector related problem still exists...

Installer did not give any error, but there is no language selection screen either. It directly starts from date-time selection screen.

QtLanguageSelector.py file isn't fixed. It is still impossible (or at least, I don't know any other native KDE way) to set system language through qt-language-selector.

And yes, nepomuk still crashes if you change default language...

I hope these issues will be fixed with daily builds.
