[SOLVED] Wasn't hal supposed to be removed in Lucid?

[Update (see below the details): HAL will be mostly removed in Lucid, but no completely gone, because some software still depends on it.]


Hi

I keep reading that hal is deprecated and unplugged in different places (including xserver). However, I still see 5 hal packages (including the one names hal). Removing any of them would trigger removal of kubuntu-desktop (ans some other packages). Any thoughts anyone? Maybe the clean up is not complete? Should this be reported sooner than later?

In particular, I just had a hal error preventing me from mounting a partition in Dolphin by simply clicking on it ...

Yeah - that's flippin' annoying. Apparently if you have a mount defined in fstab, hal won't automount it. If yuo don't have if in fstab, it will be mounted in /media/XXX.

Good point in general, I've seen that happen, but it's not the case here

I am trying to mount /dev/sdb1

Thanks in any case, it will be useful to other people, especially in Karmic. I am more generally curious about the status of hal in Lucid ...

I have a few hal packages on my system as well .....but clicking one of my 2 drives that arnt in fstab in the places panel in dolphin dose mount them (2 windows partitions).

have you tryed to mount it the old way (IE: with mkdir and mount)? ..........or add it to fstab? ....or is this not desirabel.

Yeah, I should kick the tires a bit, try to mount manually, etc. It's not a big deal for me, I am wondering if we need to report this in Launchpad for the most thing (this is one of the reasons I run Lucid)

Shortly:

A bug report > Bug #500205: Dolphin in 4.4 Betas 1&2 Fails to mount internal drives other than root.


=> A workaround (working here) is to start the Dolphin as root (kdesudo dolphin) and then the mount is possible. The unmounting is possible as an ordinary user.
