Lucid works with my Canon t2i like it's supposed to

I got my hands on a Canon EOS Rebel t2i DSLR. It's a new camera model that was announced in mid-February.

All I had to do was install DigiKam. The camera is detected as a camera. Clicking on the icon in the device manager starts DigiKam and it opens to the picture directory. I can transfer files and delete from the camera's memory card.

Now it may be that earlier versions of Kubuntu would have done the same, but I didn't have a camera to find out.

I thought I would post this in case somebody wanted to know how this camera would work with Linux and Kubuntu in particular.

Thank you very much for your report. More users should do exactly what you did.

If you want a cute demonstration of how far linux hardware support has come in the last few years. This would make a great demo. I've been using linux ever since I could get Mandrake 6 (I think, it's been way too long) to install. Perhaps even more importantly how well this new model of camera works with Linux shows what adherence to open or at least properly documented standards & protocols make possible.

I'll have to connect the camera to wife's XP laptop & see how the other half lives.

Even though I've been using Linux for 10 years, I was impressed with how simple it all was. I suppose the next step would be plugging in a device & a pop-up window offering to install the relevant software. I only vaguely remembered reading about DigiKam once upon a time. I wouldn't think that this would be particularly difficult: a database of USB id numbers updated from time to time cross-referenced with relevant software.

I'm still on karmic with KDE 4.4 but read this and decided to connect my old pentax optio e65 to the computer and immediately had the device notifier pop up with correct camera ID and requesting if i want to download photos with gwenview or open with file manager. Surprisingly kamera cannot detect the same camera and it's not on the model listed under pentax. But Linux has come a long way for the last 5 years I've been using it and gets better with every distro update.
