    accessing desktop activity kills plasma-desktop

I had a friend who is running Windows use SKype to watch my 64bit Lucid desktop while I was giving him a demo of Kubuntu Lucid Lynx.

My widgets were locked. I had previously just completed an upgrade of 8 packages, including an xserver.

I attempted to open the "Desktop Activity Settings" options. The screen froze for a few seconds and then the plasma-desktop died, given me a black screen but with windows I was last working with still visible. I opened the command run box and gave it "plasma-desktop", which brought back my desktop. I do not know if it was attempting to access the desktop activity settings with widgets locked, or the xserver upgrade, which is responsible for the failure of the Desktop Activity Setting dialog option to open up the dialog it is supposed to open up.

However, I can no longer access my Desktop Activity Settings to change my background image, etc. Attempting to do so always kills the plasma-desktop regardless of the wiget lock setting.

I've reinstalled plasma-desktop, kubuntu-desktop, and all of the other plasma applets related to desktop activity but it hasn't helped. I can't see changes in the config files under ~/.kde.

My last option, unless anyone out there has a better idea, or knows where the magic setting to change is, is to rename ~/.kde to ~/.kde-busted, log out, and log back in.

mmm..., Toad, ... don't know why you couldn't post to this thread, it's not locked.

I saw that possible fix you mentioned, but, if I understand it correctly, it is for starting the plasma-desktop at login time for cases when the plasma-desktop doesn't start normally. My plasma-desktop comes up fine and works great, EXCEPT for when I want to change the Desktop Activity Settings.

I saved my old ".kde" folder as ".kde_backup" and I restarted the desktop to create a new one. It has no problem with the Desktop Activity Settings. I have been comparing the contents of the two folders for any changes but so far the places where the old one differs from the new one don't reveal anything to appears to be abnormal. Ownership and permissions are the same on everything. I am going to continue till I've checked everything. Probably won't find anything, but who knows?

I have noticed a couple differences in behavior with the new desktop (I have the latest updates installed as of this morning):
    1) the yawp package I installed previously now refuses to install, and
    2) The widgets I've placed on the desktop will not hold my size settings.
So, when I adjust the weather plasmoid to a different location, and/or to show several days and nights of weather it immediately snaps to another position of its own choosing and shrinks back to showing just two days of weather. I want the network activity plasmoid to be wider to show more of the time line, but it snaps back to a small square and to its own choosing.

So, the new plasma-desktop is a little stubborn.

Thread is not locked, as GG has stated, and obviously, I'm posting this reply. I momentarily locked then unlocked this thread, so maybe that might fix what ever problem Toad or others are having.

If anyone is not able to post to this thread, click on the report to moderator link and let us know. We might have to move the thread to jog it free?

Actually, the fault is mine. I posted the topic under the major heading, not "General". Moderators have no trouble accessing threads under the major headings but users cannot. I moved all of my threads from the major title to "General" this morning.

          Sorry about that.

BTW, I ended up renaming ~./.kde and redoing my desktop. Wasn't hard, didn't take long.
