I had a friend who is running Windows use SKype to watch my 64bit Lucid desktop while I was giving him a demo of Kubuntu Lucid Lynx.
My widgets were locked. I had previously just completed an upgrade of 8 packages, including an xserver.
I attempted to open the "Desktop Activity Settings" options. The screen froze for a few seconds and then the plasma-desktop died, given me a black screen but with windows I was last working with still visible. I opened the command run box and gave it "plasma-desktop", which brought back my desktop. I do not know if it was attempting to access the desktop activity settings with widgets locked, or the xserver upgrade, which is responsible for the failure of the Desktop Activity Setting dialog option to open up the dialog it is supposed to open up.
However, I can no longer access my Desktop Activity Settings to change my background image, etc. Attempting to do so always kills the plasma-desktop regardless of the wiget lock setting.
I've reinstalled plasma-desktop, kubuntu-desktop, and all of the other plasma applets related to desktop activity but it hasn't helped. I can't see changes in the config files under ~/.kde.
My last option, unless anyone out there has a better idea, or knows where the magic setting to change is, is to rename ~/.kde to ~/.kde-busted, log out, and log back in.
