headphones work but don't turn off pc sound

I have a brand new laptop and am loving lucid kubuntu on it. Only real trouble i've had is with knetworkmanager losing it's setting for wireless activated leaving it giving me the unmanaged message on mouse over, easy fix... and this one. I plug in headphones and sound comes through them great, but my pc speakers are still on and just as loud as without the headphones. is there a fix for this?

I'm running the 64bit Kubuntu Lucid Lynx and my sound chip is the same as yours, on my Sony VAIO VGN-FW140E, but my sndstat output is slightly different:

    jerry@vgnfw140e:~$ cat /dev/sndstat
Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v1.0.21 emulation code)
    Kernel: Linux vgnfw140e 2.6.32-14-generic #20-Ubuntu SMP Sat Feb 20 05:18:19 UTC 2010 x86_64
    Config options: 0

    Installed drivers:
    Type 10: ALSA emulation

    Card config:
HDA Intel at 0xd5600000 irq 22

    Audio devices:
    0: ALC262 Analog (DUPLEX)

Synth devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Midi devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

I believe there are some problems with sound chip detection and configuration in Lucid. Running Karmic and Jaunty on this same box, KMix showed many more controls and, more importantly, it offered two input sources to set. Lucid's KMix does not. Luckily, it shows one capture control which is linked to the mic, so I can capture sound and record it, and use Skype or Ekgia. And, unlike your situation, when I plug in a headphone the sound from the laptop speakers cut off. On another computer I installed AlsaMixer from the repository and ran it as root. It added a "digital" control which is useful in where the mic garbles sound. Raising the digit setting to around 80 cleared up the mic output. But, as far as cutting off sound to the speakers when you have a headset plugged in you'll need the Source, LFE, Jack, and Mixer Out settings in KMix, if it shows them. On Jaunty and Karmic they did, on Lucid they do not show.
