Re: Todays upgrade breaking my system?

I may be missing the point; if so forgive me for being so uneducated in all matters Linux.

All my upgrades are done with aptitude on a Konsole. Last night I had exactly the same warning.
Accepted the suggested solution, upgraded without any further problems.

Lucid is running just fine -

except I do not understand the situation with the main panel. I can splatter icons all over the desktop, but I cannot get them all into the main panel. Maybe it is by design?
How are you trying to add them ?

Here the "Add to Favorites/Desktop/Panel" is working fine.

Re: Todays upgrade breaking my system?

Using the K-icon shown I can get the application icon on the desktop. However, my K icon does not show the option of adding it to the kicker panel.

I can open a "panel" and then go to add another widget. It makes the application icon appear on the desktop at best.

Now, I forgot to mention that I am running the 64 bit version of Lucid. Maybe that explains the problem I am having.

Not running Lucid right now or I would have added a screenshot showing the weird 'desktop'.

Re: Todays upgrade breaking my system?

        After yesterdays update I got:
        cannot open: /usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/ethais/
I had to comment out the theme line in:
        /etc/kde4/kdm/
Then set kdm manually in system settings.

Re: Todays upgrade breaking my system?

The 64 bit compilation seems done, apparently they uploaded python-kde4, because I am reinstalling kubuntu-desktop as we speak. I might get stuck with the ethais issue, but I doubt it, because I touched all these files.

Update: it did complete ok. Only the indicator display widget is not loading, but it is installed. Maybe it needs to be upgraded.

BTW, KDM should not fail to load just because a theme is not there!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Todays upgrade breaking my system?

if you go to a console, and startx then go to kde settings and advanced then login manager, you should be able to select a theme that does exist on your system. After this you can either just keep working for the day or reboot and your kdm theme should work again and all should be happy. It is true though that better fail setup should happen where a default empty theme should be used should the theme not exist.

Re: Todays upgrade breaking my system?

Hi All, I also had the "ethais" problem, but I dropped to a console using [ctrl+alt+F1], and started the system with a console login. All went OK. Did today's update - but the system did not complete the installation, and issued dpkg errors.

Tried to complete and clear the system by typing "sudo dpkg --configure -a" in a console. Got the following:-

                philip@Kubuntu-Lucid:~# sudo dpkg --configure -a
                Setting up initramfs-tools (0.92bubuntu64) ...
                update-initramfs: deferring update (trigger activated)

                Processing triggers for initramfs-tools ...
                update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-12-generic
cpio: ./lib/udev/firmware.sh: Cannot stat: No such file or directory
                update-initramfs: failed for /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-12-generic
dpkg: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
                philip@Kubuntu-Lucid:~#

Now I cannot "unlock" the cache so I cannot access any package management utils. Any ideas how I can sort out this ./lib/udev/firmware.sh problem?

Re: Todays upgrade breaking my system?

have you tried "sudo apt-get update"? It will tell you the name of the lock file that is bothering. If things are broken anyway, it may help to remove that file and try again. Hopefully there will be a new initramfs package soon, and in principle I would try not to reboot in the meantime. If you have to, maybe older kernels will be fine

                  Good luck!

Same thing happed to me this morning after the update.

Apparently, either an update forgot to install a file, or it was renamed and forgot to update the script.

In either case, here is what I did to resolve the issue:

                    ln -s /lib/udev/firmware /lib/udev/firmware.sh

Basically, the firmware file is still there, but should have been renamed to .sh or changed the filename in the calling script. Interesting to note that the firmware file is a bin and not a script, but this worked as a band-aid.

                    Hope this helps!!!

                    Joe

Imilano:- Thanks for your suggestion! I'd already tried that. The output I posted was after already doing what you suggested.

LinuxRocks:- Thanks! Did that and system now works! Funny thing, I had looked at the /lib/udev file and found the firmware file and wondered if I should rename it! BUT I was worried I might trash something else. Anyway all is now fine, complete with today's newer 56 further updates. So many thanks for your help.

the firmware <> firmware.sh issue should be fixed in udev version 151-2

(firmware.sh was rewritten in C, but the initramfs hook script was not changed accordingly)

Guys, I was affected by the ethias bug as well, I went and log in console log in and solved it by doing :

                            sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

I went and modifed kdmrc to have the theme for kdm.

I boot my machine back and I cant login via kdm, it start to log and kick me back out to the window of kdm with the login and password asked.

If I login in console and then do a :
                            startx

                            everything is ok

How do I fix kdm ?

                            Thanks in advance

just find how to fix it, I had to select default in kdm to be able to start it.

I have three things in the first button :

                              Default (previous) which works

                              KDE that works

                              failsafe that does not

is that normal that failsafe does not work ?

                              Thanks in advance

kde4.4 final arrived but upgrade gives:
                                E: Couldn't configure pre-depend virtuoso-opensource-6.0-bin for virtuoso-opensource-6.0, probably a dependency cycle.

I guess some fooling around is called for.
