File sharing in 10.04 out of box???

Can Kubuntu share files now out of box without installing anything, all previous Ubuntu and Kubuntu versions wanted to install something. Windows and Mac works out of box.

This is good and easy sharing app too:

I have never been able to get Windows to work on a network without running the network setup wizard and rebooting first. Not exactly out of the box.

I mean file sharing should be out of box at least Kubuntu to Kubuntu

It would be nice if they included samba by default and a very simple setup screen to give your computer a shared name, a Domain/Workgroup name, and identify a directory/folder to share.

I always end up installing samba and gnome-system-tools so I can use the shares-admin program. It is easy enough, but KDE should have its own program like this.

Maybe it does, anyone have a name for it?

In karmic the module is called kdenetwork-filesharing

And it is finally working out of box? not like older Kubuntus had file sharing options but required installation. Ballmer file sharing support may continue to be optional i don't care but Kubuntu to Kubuntu is critical.

Re: File sharing in 10.04 out of box

Lucid: On my laptop as a client running Lucid with smbcleint installed, it works fine and sees (dolphin/network/samba/workgroup/hostmachine) my desktop shares running Karmic with samba installed (not just smbcleint) along with kdenetwork-filesharing (that puled samba in as a dependency). Kdenetwork-filesharing is still a package available in Lucid and it is not installed by default. If you go to dolphin and try to share a folder, it prompts for a password, but it stops there.

I installed kdentwork-filesharing on the my Lucid laptop just to answer this post and it did not ask for samba or nfs as a dependency. I then tried the sharing/configure tab in dolphin: it asked if I want simple or advanced sharing. Advanced didn't seem available, so it looks much like in the past, samba or nfs-kernel-server needs to be installed for advanced. I did however install samba and saw that I could tick "advanced" for file sharing. NFS was still "x'ed out.

I did not try further. I just wanted to answer whether it works out of the box (fresh install without installing other packages), answer:
as a client, yes using dolphin/network if you have (samba at least) shares set up on another machine
              as a host, no

              Hope this helps.
