How to upgrade from Karmic to Lucid?

How do I upgrade Kubuntu KK to LL? Do I have to use a CD or is there an upgrade path as with Ubuntu?

You are aware that Lucid is still under development, and still just Alpha? Do you really want to upgrade from a working Karmic to what will likely be a broken system?
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

That was going to be my next question, is it OK for most purposes or is it still too unstable? I guess you've already answered that one!

If desire to have a fully working system, do not upgrade until Lucid is in Beta at the earliest, although waiting until it is an RC would be better. If you like living on the bleeding edge, and enjoy self inflicted pain and suffering, then upgrade to Lucid.

I used to, but I am a reformed character, I'll wait for the beta to come out.

Unless your intent is to actually test LL and provide feedback, there's no need to jump onto LL until it's released. Now if you have a lot of curiosity about LL, you might consider a dual boot kind of situation. Even then, with the development releases, alpha, beta, and rc, you'd be spending a lot of energy on something that is intentionally unstable until the RC stage at best.

I've tried a few times. It's not worth it, again, unless you intend to give some feedback to the devs.

EDIT: Oh, one more joyous "feature". Apparently KDE 4.4 gets tossed into the mix; more unstable joys ;>)

A link list > Topic: Lucid Release Schedule, Plans, KDE 4.4:

              Warnings

This is an alpha release. Do not install it on production machines. The final stable version will be released on April 29, 2010.
This is an alpha (pre-) release. Pre-release versions of Lucid are NOT encouraged for anyone needing a stable system or for anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even frequent, breakage. Pre-release versions ARE recommended for Kubuntu developers and those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing bugs.' Please do not use this in a production environment with data or workflows that you cannot do without

I guess I do because I have tried to install Alpha 1 or 2 for the last four releases. Sometimes it works and sometime it don't but I keep trying. I always dual boot with at least one past version sometimes two as in now. Not big fan of Karmic. I would suggest that if you want to play, dual boot or stay away until beta at least.

Has anyone tried it who can report if the transition from HAL to udev works (when upgrading) or if you end up getting stuck with both/neither/a complete mess?

Re: How to upgrade from Karmic to Lucid?

I have tried to upgrade my karmic system to lucid, several times.
On or before Jan 8th, it worked fine.
After that, upgrading both the lucid system, and trying to upgrade the karmic system again, fails to boot. It appears to be hanging at the point of mounting the file system. No logs are written. The kernel is still there - it responds to CTRL-ALT-DEL, ALT-SYSRQ-stuff, etc. But the boot process just goes dead, and without any logs or further info, it seems hopeless. I do get a whole mess of udevd errors just before it hangs, but I got those when it was working, too. Since I cannot get any live cds to work, I can't compare with a working system.

I would suggest to install Lucid on a separate partition if you want to help out in the testing phase. I would keep your production OS isolated for right now.

I had both Ubuntu and Kubuntu Lucid installed and Kubuntu is very unstable. Ubuntu and Gnome has little problems on my hardware...so far.

As far as Kubuntu, KDE4rc is the main culprit., again on my hardware.
