It's been about 10 days now, and every time I try to update and reboot lucid, it dies, and dies at the same point, where the "Starting init crypto disks [OK]" message is. That's as close as I can remember it, it's after the gazillion udev errors, and the warning about a backup file I have in /etc/modprobe. It just freezes cold, and a second round of mesa updates (which is apparently what killed it in the first place) is not resolving the issue. I think the kernel itself may be alive, as CTRL-ALT-DEL does shut down the system.
So I need to determine what is actually killing the boot process, in order to proceed. I cannot boot the system, but I can get into the file system from another OS (karminc). Ideas?
