Further experiments show that adding the "noauto" option in fstab prevents the system from hanging, yet still allows the devices to be mounted where they belong with 'sudo mount -a'.

I notice there is now a "Removable Devices" option in Systemsettings > Advanced. Might have some interesting options there.
