    Alpha 1/2 Hickups (Xorg/Mesa/Radeon)

Today i noticed that the "Compositing is not supported on your system."

    [img width=400 height=159]http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/4203/compositinge.png[/img]

and the desktop was a bit "sluggish"

    The Xorg.0.log told that:
    Code:
    grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log
    [ 0.000095] (WW) warning, [ 0.000109] (EE) error, [ 0.000123] (NI) not implemented, [ 0.000137] (??) unknown.
    [ 0.163563] (II) Loading extension MIT-SCREEN-SAVER
[ 0.165215] (EE) Failed to load module "glx" (module does not exist, 0)
[ 0.168401] (EE) Failed to load module "dri" (module does not exist, 0)
    [ 8.985371] (EE) RADEON(0): Failed to register i2c bus
and there was not libglx.so in the /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions
    Code:
    ls -l /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 17920 2010-01-12 13:12 libdbe.so
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 13784 2010-01-12 13:12 libdri2.so
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 92336 2010-01-12 13:12 libextmod.so
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 9708 2010-01-12 13:12 librecord.so
The package management told that the xserver-xorg-core is latest and it has installed the /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so. Reinstalling the xserver-xorg-core and after that
    Code:
    ls -l /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 17920 2010-01-12 13:12 libdbe.so
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 13784 2010-01-12 13:12 libdri2.so
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 34488 2010-01-12 13:12 libdri.so
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 92336 2010-01-12 13:12 libextmod.so

    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 9708 2010-01-12 13:12 librecord.so
Rebooting and there are new errors:
    Code:
    grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log
    [ 0.000076] (WW) warning, [ 0.000087] (EE) error, [ 0.000097] (NI) not implemented, [ 0.000107] (??) unknown.
    [ 0.162460] (II) Loading extension MIT-SCREEN-SAVER
[ 0.434351] (EE) RADEON(0): [agp] AGP failed to initialize. Disabling the DRI.
    [ 8.269095] (EE) RADEON(0): Failed to register i2c bus
[ 8.402108] (EE) AIGLX error: dlopen of /usr/lib/dri/(null)_dri.so failed (/usr/lib/dri/(null)_dri.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)
[ 8.402130] (EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering

A bug report > Bug #468413: Radeon module loaded before agpgart with various workarounds.

With the /etc/init/kdm.conf workaround the Xorg log is cleaner:
    [ 0.000084] (WW) warning, [ 0.000095] (EE) error, [ 0.000107] (NI) not implemented, [ 0.000119] (??) unknown.
    [ 0.160558] (II) Loading extension MIT-SCREEN-SAVER
    [ 9.220317] (EE) RADEON(0): Failed to register i2c bus

    Re: Alpha 1/2 Hickups (Xorg/Mesa/Radeon)

Today's mesa updates totally killed my system.
Can't boot into single mode, text console, graphics, or anything.
It dies at the end of the "modprobe" deprecation warnings.
Trying older kernels does not work - same problem, so it's not the kernel.
This is as of 07:00 PST on 14 January.

So, as it stands now, I can't update. Any ideas how to get in? Otherwise, I guess it's delete, copy over the old system, and do the full upgrade again.

If you have an alternate CD you could try the "Rescue a broken system" option, but sometimes the new&clean installation is the fastest and easiest option.

OK, I will download the alternate cd. None of the live cds have worked since jaunty; they all hang at a blank screen after the "Try without installing" menu option. I have not tried the alternate CD yet, but will.

Since this system is about 3 years old, a new/clean install would be neither fast nor easy.

I'll report back with the alt-cd results.

OK, just wasted another blank CD. The alt-cd gets to the menu that includes "Rescue a broken System." Looks promising, but it goes straight to a blank screen and dies.

[flame on] There really is no excuse for this. The live cds / alt cds should, and have to, work, for precisely this situation. What happens if I lose my main system? There is no way to repair it, apparently, and all of the discussions about this problem here and elsewhere lead only to black holes. I realize that it's nearly impossible for a developer to troubleshoot a blank screen, but then again, there isn't much a user can do beyond reporting it, either. And that doesn't solve the problem. It's not like I'm running a PC put together with parts no one has ever heard of. This is a Dell tower with an NVIDIA board, 64-bit Intel processor, NVIDIA video -- all within the limits of standard, I should think. And it DID work, up to and including JJ. And the Sidux and OpenSUSE live cd's, of roughly the same vintage as Karmic, work fine. So WTH is the problem? [flame off]

OK, I got my $0.cd worth. Now to reload from backup...

There's a lot of problems related to X of late. I'm sure you tried putting "nomodeset" on the end of your linux line to see if it at least allows you to a terminal.

Yeah, tried that, no joy. I reloaded from backup, from before the whole mesa thing happened, so we'll see how the update goes.

Traditionally, that's caused by the Nvidia card not using a using a suitable default video setting for the booted kernel. Try some "vga=xxx" boot options -- perhaps 788, 791, or 785.

Just guessing, really -- I have not time to play with 10.04, just yet. Waiting for Beta ...

Yep, tried every one that works on a normal boot, including the 'nomodeset' and setting nothing. I read somewhere something about the "nv" drivers used on the cd's being broken. Well, I think they need to be fixed, if this is the problem with the cds. And it's not just 10.04, it's 9.10, and actually, kubuntu-9.04, though Ubuntu-9.04 does work, but Ubuntu-9.10 does not.

Back to the problem with lucid -- I reloaded the backup from 8 Jan, then updated. Same problem, it gets to "starting init crypto disks" (of which, by the way, there are none), and then dies -- it just sits there, no further progress, no further activity. If I look in /etc/init.d, the next thing after the crypto disks is cups, then dbus, so I wonder if one of those is croaking?
                  Or maybe the cryptodisk stuff?

Either way, it's not bootable, so it's a serious problem. I can get into it to edit things from my stable system, of course, but lucid is dead as it stands.

In the Known Issues , there is no mention of nv specific , but a lot of folks are reporting boot to black screen or no X.

I waited till today to update/upgrade and have had few issues. None with graphics (default driver).

I still have the ubuntu boot splash and upon reboot plasma decided it didn't need a panel any more so it dumped all the widgets on the desktop.

Just added a panel and repopulated it with my favorite widgets.

                      Compositing works fine and fast.

                      Edit: Still no copy/paste

                        From the alpha2 release notes:
Due to the recent changeover to Plymouth, the boot splash shows the Ubuntu logo instead of Kubuntu's. (For now)
(I guess no one has made a plymouth splash for kubuntu yet)

                          I guess not.

                          I can wait for that.

Yes. I had to stop it and restart it now it seems to be behaving again.
