    RollerMouse problem

    Hello

I got this RollerMouse Pro, a quite neat device as a complement to a ordinary mouse.

For Karmic it work out of the box more or less (some buttons don't seem to work, I haven't tried setting it up yet) but when I try to boot Lucid xserver crash and screen goes black (input to the screen actually dies). I can log in to terminal in safemode but can't startx.
There's no difference between the xorg.conf of KK & LL really, there isn't a mouse device mentioned in either one of them(maybe there shouldn't be?).
All topics for these kind of devices on ubuntuforums is atleast 1½ y old, not sure they are much help either(would it be any difference if I took the xorg.conf like here and get the essential?). One other mentioned switching plug usb>ps2 ... but since it do work in KK I'm not sure what :S

Greygeek spoke of "X --configure", HAL and Grub2 vs Grub in another post here, but I have no clue if this has anything to do with it. My Karmic install is a upgrade from Intripid (thus Grub) while the Lucid is a fresh install.
It could be a bug but since it does work in Karmic I assume it's some setting.

I don't know .. and not much to find on the net either .. seems most that run these devices do it in a office .. and most of those run M$ (atleast that's my assumption )

    /Jonas

PS; Brilliant piece of device in Karmic .. seem to take some time to get used to though

    EDIT
hmm .. it do work if I plug it in after I have logged in... actually both mouse and roller work if plugged in after login.

Does 10.04, with this mouse connected, boot and run from the LiveCD?

The Ubuntu is moving away from the hal ( > HAL Audio ) so there is/will be breakages.

Stupid question, but why is HAL being deprecated? I understand part of it since it isn't being maintained, but why did that stop? It's been used soooo long.

          Re: RollerMouse problem

Hi thank you all for the input. I tried to set it up and narrow down what the problem could be, rebooted the system several times for a solution, without success. So today I got home from work and tried your tip Snowhog and it did work with my burned alpha disk. Forgetting that I had the rollermouse in I rebooted the system, and when I realised that the roller was connected I thought system would crash again .. but to my surprise it booted up nicely .. apart from "the usual" plasma-crashes

I can't remember which if any updates Ive had since yesterday (any update I do go thru the cli, where do I check that history?) happy it worked once*knock on wood*

Thanks for the links Rog .. I should read up more on the postHAL time in Linux .. but in 2010 it should still be HAL9000! (was way to long since I saw those movies though, prefer Asimovs over Clarks stories though)
Interesting to see that albertomilone (same as EnvyNG?) testing wacom tablets .. one of the reasons I got this mousedevice was to "move" the mouse away from the right side/hand to get space for a drawing tablet.

Anyway mouse device seem to work and Jonas is a Happy roller!

Edit; rebooted several times to see if I could recreate any trouble, and I did, could it be something to do with xorg and this device and screen output, sometimes I get "some" screen sometimes I get less or none. Been looking in the /var/log.Xorg.0.log .. not sure what to look for though.

            The > Halsectomy is telling:
Hal is in the process of being deprecated, since it has become a large monolithic unmaintainable mess, and also duplicates a lot of functionality which are nowadays provided by udev and the kernel itself...

                What exactly is UDEV?
                > Udev wiki:
udev is the device manager for the Linux 2.6 kernel series. Primarily, it manages device nodes in /dev. It is the successor of devfs and hotplug, which means that it handles the /dev directory and all user space actions when adding/removing devices, including firmware load...

So it seems that HAL was a middle man that was no loner needed. Poor HAL.
