I have wireless working - first with Network Manager and now with WICD, which I prefer because it does not need work after every kernel update.
Both wired and wireless work essentially right out of the box. Airlink wireless adapter (Atheros chipset) and DLink router.
DHCP.
Works also from the command line (dhclient wlan0).
I downloaded the current LiveCD of Lucid on Jan 2nd, and burned an ISO. It booted up VERY FAST and I noted that nm was in the system tray. I left clicked on it and a dialog box appeared with a list of access points in my vicinity, including my wireless routher and my printer adhoc print server wireless router. I left clicked on my wireless router and another dialog popped up asking for my password. I entered it and got an immediate connection. Easiest wireless connection "right out of the box" I've ever encountered with Kubuntu.
Using the LiveCD I created a LiveUSB, which also works faultlessly. I played with the LiveUSB for several hours and had only a phantom crash or two of a plasmoid, but it immediately reinstalled itself. KDE 4.4 is the fastest, most powerful and easiest to use version of KDE that I have ever run. When it goes gold I will be doing a fresh install of it on every laptop I own and on as many dependents as are suitable for it.
