'update notifier' breaks. . . install? (UPDATE - ALmost Fixed)

    [Bug 494499] confirmed. Fix committed.
    See: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/494499

    "Changed in: update-manager (Ubuntu Lucid)
Status: In Progress => Fix Committed"

This is indeed a bug as pointed out to me in a reply to my post.
Eliminated the problem temporarily by installing the latest daily build - and by not upgrading the OS when upgrades become available.

I will instead only upgrade via latest daily builds meybe every two weeks or so until I receive notification of a bug fix.

My system became unusable after the flawed upgrade. Removing the offending Knotifier/Update Notifier shell scripts did not resolve the issue.

Installed Lucid 32bits three times; Lucid 64bit version twice. Same issue:

Instead of booting into Lucid I get a black screen with login prompt after error message:

    ". . . run-parts: /etc/update-motd.d/91-release-upgrade exited with return code 1"

Unable to connect to x server. Lookup of the above location finds only a link in update-motd.d.

I can update the OS via command line, bit regardless of the updates installed, the error message remains unchanged and the OS does not boot.

Does anyone else have this issue? Any input? My next step will be to delete the link but I am first waiting for your input.

Now I did. So it is a bug.
The bug report does not say anything about not being able to log into the OS.

Graphics card is nVidia gForce 4000 and another nvidia card (5600?).
They work just fine on 9.10 and all other previous releases of Kubuntu.
They also work fine when Lucid is installed from installation CD - until it is updated.

The reference to to 'etc/update-motd.d/91-release-upgrade' leads to several shell scripts in the update-motd.d. directory.

I removed the update notifier scripts and the update notifier altogether. It did not resolve the issue, created another type of login issue instead.
As for the rest - see above.
