    Re: Kubuntu 10.04 Lucid

I always use the alt cd with alphas and synaptic / apt / apptitude.

Looks pretty good after a few minutes of testing for now

does anyone else have to "login" twice?
Yes. Not only that, but plasma-desktop doesn't start, so I wind up with a black screen. Added plasma-desktop in the systemsettings>advanced>autostart and all works well now.

        Re: Kubuntu 10.04 Lucid

Hmm .. I still feel quite new to Linux, and yet another newbie question
I've been playing around with KpackageKit, apt-get and Synaptic looking for updates and differences. So whenever there is a update I check KPK, Synaptic and CLI apt.
Just now I saw some updates in KPK (24 I think) so I checked apt-get(where 20*something* packages were 'held back' ) and last I checked Synaptic.
These are the 'updates' I got from Synaptic (with the suggestion to remove 80-90*something* packages), and among those the kernel, I somehow think that removing the kernel will brake my system, shouldn't they be updated/replaced (?)

*sorry for the long post- alot of packages*
edit; removed 140 lines of nonsens
        From Synaptic;
        Code:
        ....*alot...
        ....of packages**

        linux-generic will be removed

        linux-image-2.6.32-8-generic will be removed
        linux-image-2.6.32-9-generic will be removed

          @Jonas:
These sort of dependency conflicts are fairly common with devel versions, which makes running/upgrading them hazardous at best. Even if you're experienced, "blind" or automatic upgrading is a recipe for destruction.

Always a good idea to hold the upgrade if unsure (or if more than a couple of packages would get removed and not replaced by new packages)

This particular conflict seems to be fixed on the main repos, mirrors might take time to update.

Cheers for the quick reply. Yes; i never did that upgrade(or 'crash and burn' downgrade) but I find it very interesting to see and follow the development process, I will try to avoid using the installers and stick with CLI for any update as it seems to be the most reliable atm(..and maybe all the time).

I had this problem, but I renamed my .kde directory and the problem disappeared when it re-established "clean" settings. I copied my app settings back in and the problem has not returned.

So - you may want to give that a go. I see someone said there was a launchpad bug for it: You might want to read that first, in case they can direct you to the specific file causing the problem. I could not find the launchpad bug when I was looking for one a while back - but I may have fixed my problem before it was filed.

No sooner did I post that than find that something in recustomizing my themes, window decorators, etc. has caused the problem to return.

Anyone have a link to the launchpad bug? I'm looking for it now, but not seeing it on the keywords I'm trying.

                Thx in advance.

                    Re: Kubuntu 10.04 Lucid

I have reinstalled daily Alternate twice and when I reboot after install I get a command prompt and can not get past that. I have installed Ubuntu Lucid and it boots ok but in low graphics mode. I attempted to install the Nvida 185 but I got the command prompt after boot. I reinstalled and tried to install the nvidia 195 driver but it was not reconized at boot up and still went into low graphic mode. Downloaded the Kubuntu daily build yesterday and attempted to install. Same as before. I am not smart enought to manually install the Nvidia 195 driver from the command prompt so at this point I will have to wait until we get past this. I just like to give the early version a try to see if I can figure it out and follow the development just for fun.

I tried deleting the .kde folder but still booted to a command prompt. Can't figure out how to boot in safe mode. All I ever see is the grub screen and there is no place on it to boot in safe mode. (maybe using wrong words here)

Don't know if you're aware of this, but to get to the grub menu in grub 2 you have to press Shift when you see the Grub Loading message.
As for Nvidia, I'm not sure since I've never had a Nvidia card, but with ATI the proprietary drivers don't usually work until the very last moment since AMD need to release drivers that work with the newer kernel.
If you get to the command line when you boot you can try to remove any xorg.conf you might have (back it up first) and then run
                        Code:
                        sudo X -configure
which will (hopefully) create an xorg.conf.new file in the home folder of the user who runs it, then try to copy it to /etc/X11 as xorg.conf and see if it takes you further.
Also, might be worth-while reading about Nouveau which, if I understand it correctly, are the open source drivers for Nvidia and might work better for a development release. Again, I know next to nothing about Nvidia drivers but at the moment I can't use the proprietary ATI drivers on Lucid while the open source drivers work very well. Alternatively try the IRC kubuntu-devel channel and ask the devs, they probably already know the answer.

After many attempts I finally got the Nvidia 190 driver installed and it is working but only in Ubuntu. I for some reason can't reason get the KDE Desktop to install and so far I have not been able to get Kubuntu to install past the command prompt but will keep trying.

Now have the 195 driver installed and it is working very well but still have a conflict with something when I attempt to install the kde desktop

There is a bug in kde-4.4, and for some reason it does not install the plasma desktop. Just a slight oversight.

either ctrl-alt-F2 to a console, or ALT-F2 then konsole.
                            Code:
                            sudo apt-get install plasma-desktop
                            Then ALT-F2, and run plasma-desktop.
I had to add plasma-desktop in SystemSettings > Advanced > Autostart to get it working on bootup.

I tried to do this but ctrl-alt-f2 or ALT-F2 does not work. I can only get apt-get to run. I can change directorys and all that but nothing else. Guess I am domed to wait for Alpha 2 and hope it works. I will keep doing updates and upgrades everyday in the hope something fixes it so it will boot into KDE. I can get ubuntu Lucid to work but don't like it so will wait.
