    Kubuntu 10.04 Lucid

Anybody been able to get Lucid to install. I installed it and all appeared OK but when I attempt to login I just get looped back the login screen and can't get in. Any way past this?

log in to a command prompt and update your system manually.

Remember, Lucid is FAR from anything usefull atm, not much more than Karmic plus a newer kernel for the most part. Do expect regular breakages, daily or even more often at times at this very early stage

If you update lucid, you will also have kde-4.4 (which is beta). There are many changes that introduces (and not all of them working at this point). I sometimes get the login loop -- when I log in, I get the login screen again, login again, and it works normally. Not quite sure what's going on here.

attempted to install lucid from the cd last night boots to the live cd,but the installer won't load. (by command or clicking on the .desktop file). so i rebooted and tried the "install" option no luck with that either.

Did last nights iso boot to running LiveCD? I downloaded yesterday's live iso but haven't tried it. My previous download, a couple days ago, gave only the install option, it did not boot to a running LiveCD.

              Re: Kubuntu 10.04 Lucid

After upgrade to Lucid the nvidia driver 185 from repo don`t work for me , I have manually instaled the one from nvidia side (195.22 beta) and now it`s working.
Anyway now i have a problem that plasma-desktop won`t start every time after restart kubuntu or kde, I can only start it manually using:
              Code:
               kstart plasma-dektop
Is there work around of this problem ? :P (sorry for my English).

                Re: Kubuntu 10.04 Lucid

I could see all options LiveCD, install etc. However I couldn't get a screen after the loadscreen, in fact even the "Kubuntu" logo are somewhat dimmed out and hard to see(even in safe mode). But if I selected to boot with "safe graphics mode" I got past that on to the login screen and/or splash screen.

From there I could set it up with kdesudo ubiquity in the terminal aparently its a bug explained here

I'm quite amazed how well it works (...or that it actually works for me that is )

I use the out of the box graphic drivers and with my old card I find it adequate enough.
I haven't got sound working yet however .. and I just found something I'm not used to and it's that klipper "ctrl+c" everything that I mark, not sure if it's a bug or a feature, either way I'm not used to it

I must say that I'm quite impressed after the first hour testing!

edit; forgot to mention that I get update notifications now too, something I don't get in Karmic.

Feature. Right click on the Klipper icon in the systray, configure Klipper and find "ignore selection" there and tick it, and it will revert to normal functionality.

Ah ok, thought so, not used to it but will try to adopt the new way.

I got sound working with some tweaking and some new packages.

I have two more questions, does anyone else have to "login" twice? At first I thought that I typed the wrong password but then I made certain that I was typing the correct password the first time I still have to login twice.

KpackageKit question; I did get notifications about updates before, now I don't get notifications anymore, KpackageKit is checked to give notifications in itself and in service manager - system settings (checked for use and running at boot). I had this problem in Karmic too and never figured out why it wasn't giving me the notifications.
Another thing with KpackageKit is when I do upgrade it wont ask for a password, this is only with upgrades, KpackageKit do ask when I want to install something new.
Could this compromise the security? would it be advised remove KpackageKit and stick with Synaptic?
Advices I've seen for this problem was to either get rid of KPK and/or make a fresh OS install.
(tbh I'm a little confused with the fact that I never felt Adapt was really 'completed' and now there's a new packagemanager that neither feel really 'completed', I guess it comes with the territory with running a more 'bleeding edge' *buntu distro. 8) )
I do like KpackageKit with the split-info about dependencies/requirements etc, however I don't like the windozeish shield icons, gives the impression there's a threat lurking somewhere among the packages

Still very impressed with the work of this release so far, great job from the developers!

well i installed it from the cd. no problem,

but then when i when to boot it i got grub , slightly after picking the kernel to boot. one of the two hard drives in the computer kept power cycleing.. on /off /on /off ... with just a black screen .. this is the first i either of those drives have ever done ne things has happened before (computer just locked up and restated it self as i was typing this. with karmic , so i removed the other drive.. ) as i was saying , they were both working fine w/ karmic , and the second drive that i just removed has been pluged it to a computer for enuff time to fill it w/ data and remove the data. before i got it. tested it w/ karmic a bit and had no issues prior to now. , guess i will have to cut off a chunk of the main hd to install onto.....

I think the new way might revert to the old way as KDE 4.4 progresses towards final release. I found this counter-productive and I think this being the default is actually a bug.

There's already a bug for that in launchpad and quite a few people who confirmed it.

I don't know about getting notifications because, especially with development release, I update (and install new packages) manually and so KPK never gets around to do what it's supposed to do.
What I would say is that personally I don't think that upgrading existing packages without having to type in your password. Especially if you're the only one using the computer. Actually, I wouldn't even be worried about my office computer since all other people in the office are scared of Linux (but intrigued by it).

I think my advice would be to ditch it completely, especially when using development release, and just run aptitude update and aptitude full-upgrade or aptitude safe-upgrade. I like seeing what exactly is going to happen when I upgrade and sometimes I will hold back upgrading the system if I suspect that something will break it.
