Mark Shuttleworth: Planning for Ubuntu 8.10ish - The Intrepid Ibex

IntrepidIbex
Quote
Intrepid Ibex is the code name for Ubuntu 8.10, scheduled for release in October 2008.

Releases
Quote
Ubuntu releases are supported for 18 months. Ubuntu LTS (Long Term Support) releases are supported for 3 years on the desktop, and 5 years on the server.

Schedule
Ubuntu releases every six months, one month after each Gnome release

Blueprint > KubuntuReleaseSchedule
Quote
Summary

With KDE moved to a 6 month release cycle, consider if Kubuntu should move to a cycle which matches KDE. This would mean releasing Kubuntu in February and August, shortly after the KDE release and 4 months after the Ubuntu release...

Outcomes

From the discussion, we considered the advantages of syncing release schedule to KDE are not sufficiently great as to merit overcoming the disadvantages created...

Plans / Blueprints / Todo

KDE 4 ? / Jucato:
Quote
As per the latest Kubuntu meeting, we are considering making 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) fully KDE 4. We will take whatever KDE 4 version is released at that time, most likely 4.1.2 or 4.1.3.

Kubuntu Intrepid Version

Change to KDE 4 by default in Kubuntu Intrepid and use KDE 4 applications where they are sufficiently stable...

Firefox3 KDE Integration Intrepid
Quote
Motivation

Firefox 3 comes with improved OS integration on gnome; unfortunately, the KDE user-experience still needs to catch up in order to provide a complete and integrated firefox experience on the KDE/Kubuntu Desktops.

This specs identified the main issues and proposes solutions on how those can be resolved in the mid-term...

Blueprints

Ubuntu Brainstorm
Quote
A blueprint is a feature design document. It describe a proposed feature in enough detail for a developer to implement it (not quite the same as a specification, though that term is often used). Anyone can start a blueprint though some software design or development experience would be useful. After a first draft has been composed the blueprint is typically discussed on a mailing list, forum thread or at a development meeting like UDS....

KDE 4.1 (KDE 4.2)

KDE Schedules
Quote
During development, the KDE project sets goals in features and dates for upcoming releases. This way, the team knows when it would be a good time to add a new feature or when it's time to focus on cleaning up any bugs in preparation for a release. Any plans are tentative schedules and the final dates are generally decided on the kde-core-devel mailing list.

Delays

Intrepid Alpha 1 delayed
Quote
Steve Langasek Thu Jun 12 10:42:18 BST 2008

Dear developers,

According to the published Intrepid release schedule at
<https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardyReleaseSchedule>, the first Intrepid alpha is
scheduled for today.  Due to a number of factors, however, chief among them
the current division of developer attention between the upcoming 8.04 point
release and Intrepid, the alpha release will not be made available today.

We are making every effort to get an installable alpha image together in the
coming days.  Watch this space for further information, and in the meantime
please help us get the archive in a consistent state as described on
<https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDevelopment/PackageArchive#Consistency>.

Thanks,

Intrepid Alpha 2 delayed
Quote
Steve Langasek Fri Jul 11 08:47:24 BST 2008

Dear developers,

Since ISO testing for Intrepid Alpha 2 has been progressing slower than
usual (perhaps testing ISOs for three weeks in a row is a bit tiring Smiley,
and usable desktop ISOs have been delivered late, we don't yet have a
confirmed-good set of ISO images that we can release as an alpha.

As a result, Intrepid Alpha 2 is not being released on Thursday (in your
time zone or mine!); we are instead aiming for a release on Friday once the
images have been validated.

If you'd like to help us complete this image testing to get Alpha 2 out the
door, please coordinate with the fine folks in the #ubuntu-testing channel.
Otherwise, we ask that you please hold off potentially CD-disrupting uploads
for another day as part of the soft freeze.

Thanks,
--

ALPHA

Standard alpha, beta, rc warning:

This is an alpha release. Pre-release versions of programs are NOT encouraged for anyone needing a stable system or for anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even frequent, breakage. Pre-release versions of programs ARE recommended for developers and those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing bugs (or are curious).

No. The fix will be included in the subsequent daily images, in the release
candidate image, and in the final release.

It was.

=> use daily images (look up) and read the release anouncement !

Thanks Rog.  The North American mirrors are still getting the packages this morning.

It says "Linux 2.6.27".  I assume that means "with blacklisted e1000e module" still, which means I'm stuck unable to use a kernel higher than 2.6.26 until the kernel patch is released, due to my Intel Gigabyte ethernet chip.

Does that sound about right to you?

Thanks again.   Smiley

I thought that it was problem when you were using initial alpha-6:

Serious, potentially hardware-damaging e1000e driver issue on Intrepid

affected users are advised to either use daily CD images once a resolution
is in place, or to wait for the release of the 8.10 beta, due to be released

Further discussion of this issue can be found on the ubuntu-devel mailing
list at

Hmm - is there a fix or is it "fixed" by blacklisting untill Intel develops a fix ??

Kubicle tells > Re: Has anyone else been bitten by the Intel e1000 bug?

from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IntrepidIbex/TechnicalOverview

A problem that could result in corruption of the firmware on Intel GigE ethernet hardware has led to the disabling of the e1000e driver in the Linux kernel included in Ubuntu 8.10 Beta. Ethernet devices that use this driver cannot be used with Ubuntu 8.10 Beta; support for this hardware will be re-enabled in daily builds immediately after Beta and this issue will be resolved for the Ubuntu 8.10 final release. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/263555

This is my hope -- I'm not sure when "after Beta" starts, but perhaps tomorrow or the weekend ...

I'll grab a daily build tomorrow and try it.

This problem kind of snuck up on me -- 2.6.27-4 was running so well last week, so after a few days I removed the old 2.6.26 kernel, leaving only 2.6.27-2 as a "backup" kernel.  Then, an update blacklisted the e1000e driver module, killing my wired connection, and apparently at about that same time the linux-headers package for 2.6.27-2 was removed from the repos.  So when I went back to try to install the Nvidia driver on 2.6.27-2, no headers were available.   Sad

Oh well, such is the life of early adopters!   Grin

This Intrepid release lives up to its name by including many changes, but there are some features that are not yet available in KDE4. If you would rather stay with what you know, Kubuntu 8.04 is still fully supported, see Kubuntu/KDE3-KDE4Migration and Is KDE 4.1 for you? for more information on deciding. You can try it first with the Kubuntu Intrepid Live CD and see.

NOTE: This is a Release Candidate. Do not install it on production machines. The final stable version is scheduled to be released on October 30, 2008.
