NOTE: WIP = Work In Progress
==================
integr8e:
1. codec installation - WIP
"then prompt the user as to whether he would like to install the Medibuntu repository to acquire the needed codec(s) (maybe include the explanation why Medibuntu is not included by default" - Not recommended(?)
2 ) Automatically remove (or comment out) the installation CD from the list of repos ( /etc/apt/sources.list ). - gonna follow up
3 ) Include the build-essential package by default. - been debated already by developers. Answer was no.
4) Include a list of basic terminal commands and an easy-to-understand explanation of each. - already in the Dekstop Guide (
https://help.ubuntu.com/6.06/kubuntu/desktopguide/C/terminals.html)
5 ) Printer - WIP; Mouse & Keyboard should "just work"
6 ) Maybe provide Wine by default along with an explanation of its purpose and how to use it. - Debatable. Last answer was No. We're advocating Linux and Free Software apps, not using Windows apps in Linux. If a user needs it, then it can be provided easily, but shouldn't be by default.
7 ) KDE4 should be released by then, so ask the user whether he would like to use the stable KDE3.x or the new KDE4. - WIP, at least as far as installing KDE4 on an installed KDE3 system
8 ) Compiz-Fusion - WIP. (P.S. wasn't never intended to be included by default in Kubuntu Gutsy)
------
@srikar:
The installations given in the readme files in those softwares are complex. Thus installation at the terminal makes a newbie at the start to go mad. So if wine was included by default it would hav been easy to install those softwares through wine.
- Needs more info. Wine is not the solution, since wine only adds a layer on top, so networking must work in the first place. If a Linux driver for it exists, a proper package for driver is the correct answer.

@3vi1
I would add my desire to make Yakuake a default replacement for console
- Still needs Konsole to be there. Also it's not good as generic default.
Maybe Kubuntu should give the option of installing Java and Flash plugins to the browser from the get-go. And being able to say choose that the default browser is Firefox or Opera, not Konqueror
- already possible, except for Java. choosing default browser is also there, but needs a bit of work (doesn't affect non-KDE apps), also working on choosing default file manager.
In fact, it would be nice to have a page at installation that lets you choose/prioritize all the browsers and media players you want to install, and then their mime type associations would get ordered according to your choices.. rather than you having to reorder everything yourself after you install them.
- There's a sort of *buntu policy against first-run wizards... Sane defaults are preferred over first-run customizations.
Dump Strigi as a default: couldn't agree more. unfortunately.... we'll have to see...

@cantab:
Able to do a dist-upgrade FROM DAPPER. - should be possible. at least that's the plan
After release, BREAK NOTHING. I still remember the update that broke the X-server (that may have been back in the breezy days). DON'T DO THAT AGAIN! It's acceptable (but not wanted) if an obscure package doesn't work right at release, but don't issue updates that cause breakage.
- they're constantly trying to perfect that art. a little patience and understanding is much appreciated. it's not like they did it on purpose
Apt-get rollback. - yes, a much needed feature, but something Debian needs to do from their end first. Currently there's a manual way to do that (specify older version number, pin down the version to prevent automatic updates), but it's a bit cumbersome.
Better-looking GTK widget style, the default is ugly. - the GTK widget style being used is called gtk2-engines-qt (or something), and it's purpose is to emulate the Qt/KDE style in use. It's not perfect, but the default GTK/GNOME look will even look more out of place.
Some easy way to make Firefox less of a memory hog. - Yeah, ask Mozilla Co.

If installer detects low RAM for Ubuntu or Kubuntu install, warn of this, and suggest the user install Xubuntu or a command line system instead. - it's not really the job of the installer but of the one doing the installation.
Fluxbuntu to become a 'main' project - It's actually down to Canonical, not to the Fluxbuntu people.
---------
@integr8:
1 ) Warn the user if he attempts to remove critical software and prompt him for confirmation - this would be nice. I think I suggested it before, I'll try again. but this capability should preferrably be APT itself, and I don't know how technically possible it is to implement it somewhere else (except maybe in a GUI like Adept)
2 ) Better organize the KMenu to sort applications alphabetically or categorically - by default it sorts alphabetically, unless you manually change it.
3 ) X.org - I think this one is WIP
4 ) Port BulletProofX (or the like) to KDM - needs to be added to KDM itself. but I think WIP too
---------
@aged hippy:
If i may say so, many new users will be coming predominantly from a Microsoft Windows background, and will probably have Windows programs which they will want to use.
- And reinforce the misconception that Linux is just another Windows (that it should/could run any Windows app under the sun). Fortunately, those who need Wine are corner cases like Graphics suites (photoshop) and games.

@andrewyoungisgreat
Please merge the open/save dialogues. - please clarify. all KDE apps share the same open/save dialog (code and appearance)
------
@srikar:
I think it would be better if the hardy heron has more options during installation: - the goal of the "1 CD" policy is to have the most basic and essential free software collection that majority of desktop users need. In that sense, it succeeds fairly well.
1. Multimedia codecs - like what marshallbanana, there are some that we can't ship on the CD by default. the litmus test is that anything in universe or multiverse can't be on the official CD's/DVD's
2. ntfs-3g is already installed by default in Gutsy. It just needs to be enabled. On Hardy, it will be installed and enabled by default. Wine is debatable. Current answer to that remains No.
3. When we right click on the image, set as wallpaper option must be present. : ) - that's possible already in Konqueror. The service/context menus for D3lphin just need to be reworked and it's a WIP. Alternatively, you can do that from within Gwenview when you open the image.
--------
@b0uncyfr0:
1) NTFS read/write out of the box OR if that isnt possible make sure the user knows how to set it up EASILY. - done/WIP
2) Better detection of hardware/ I know this is mainly for the kernel but still. - of course this is always being worked on, and also depends on available drivers
3) Make the installation of codecs easier, like amarok's mp3 codec installation. - done/WIP
4) On the Live/CD have an option to either install KDE3.8 or KDE4. - not possible given the CD space. Separate CD's will be provided
5) Make some Kubuntu-specific apps that have some benefit like better detection of hardware or assiting in some way. - please elaborate
6) Something thats equivalent to the gnome feature: strecth icon.That should be fun to mes around with. - what is this?
7) Get some tweaks into Kubuntu, make it faster..make it more secure...anything goes.. - always a WIP, and getting better each release

Cool Get some 3rd party apps into Hardy. It wont hurt anyone.E.g Wine, VirtualBox or Smplayer. ( Yes its better than kaffeine)
- Wine is there, Virtualbox is there, and other apps are constantly being added. But we need more packagers. So if you can lend a hand, please do.

@Bongo5HH:
On going repo updates as new versions of software are released. The biggest reason why I try the Alpha versions of Kubuntu is to have the automatic updates to the latest versions... I know I could always do those updates myself.. but hey you asked what I want and this is it.
-- this will not always be possible, given we always have to strike a balance between stability and the latest/greatest. In some cases, it's not even possible at all (it will break things). Newer stuff that are present in the development version (ubuntu+1, in this case, Hardy) and can safely be used in the current stable are usually backported and placed in the backports repository.
--------------------------------
integ8e's Summary:
1 ) Automatic/Guided codec installation - WIP
Adding 3rd party repo for coded support - not recommended because we have no control over those repositories.
2 ) Automatically remove (or comment out) the installation CD from the list of repos ( /etc/apt/sources.list ). - gonna follow up
3 ) Include the build-essential package by default. - debated by developers. last answer was no.
4) Include a list of basic terminal commands and an easy-to-understand explanation of each (maybe include a link to LinuxCommand.org in the homepage of Konqueror/Firefox). - already in the Desktop Guide (see:
https://help.ubuntu.com/6.06/kubuntu/desktopguide/C/terminals.html)
5 ) Printer and X (I think) - WIP. not sure about the others
6 ) Maybe provide Wine by default along with an explanation of its purpose and how to use it. - last answer: No
8 ) Compiz-Fusion was supposed to be included by default, but was not with either my Live CD or Alt. CD (maybe just a fluke Huh). - it was never intended for Kubuntu Gutsy. WIP for Hardy.
9 ) Nvidia's driver supports CF by default, but ATI's doesn't; maybe include the ATI patch developed for Envy to fix the problem. I would even suggest including Envy for both Nvidia and ATI drivers because of its ease of use and efficiency. - try to follow up, but this is out of the Kubuntu Team's hands
10) Fix the 'Yakuake vs. Compiz bug' and replace Konsole with Yakuake as the default console. - Yakuake is a specialty app. It doesn't make for a good default application, no matter how great it is (I use it always).
11) Give the user the option of installing Java and Flash from the get-go, and allow him to choose whichever browser he wishes to be the default (Firefox, Opera, Konqueror, ...). - Java (not yet), Flash (done), Browser (done)
12) Provide a page during installation that allows the user to choose/prioritize the browsers and media players he wants to install, and order the mimetypes according to his selection. - no to first-run wizards in *buntu
13) Drop Strigi from the list of default packages. - we'll see
14) Provide an installer that checks what is currently installed on a user's system, and as much as possible, preserves the packages and their configurations during the update. - can't really comment. needs details
15) Don't break anything during the upgrade. - always a WIP... nothing's perfect, but everyone tries.
16) Provide an 'apt-get rollback' feature that allows the user to reverse any package installation he may perform, in the event something goes wrong. - this has to happen at the APT level, so it's a change that most likely would/should come from Debian. We can probably try to do something like that for Adept though.
17) Install a firewall frontend by default. - don't know what's the official word on this fro the higher-ups
18) Include a better looking GTK widget style. - the one we have is already the best (or actually the only one) in terms of trying to emulate KDE styles. Unless we all (Ubuntu and Kubuntu) switch to a common widget style that is available for both GTK/GNOME and Qt/KDE. Currently the only style that does that is QtCurve, and switching Ubuntu to that will be next to impossible

19) Make Firefox less of a memory hog. - Mozilla Co. where art thou?
20) Warn the user if his system contains a negligible amount of RAM, and suggest he install something like Xubuntu or a command-line system instead. - Dunno, but imho, this isn't the responsibility of the installer, but the persond doing the installation. He/she should check the system requirements. Besides, it's going to be more frustrating to have downloaded and burned a CD only to be told later that your system can't handle it and that you should download another one.
21) Include Fluxbuntu with the main projects. - Canonical's call, and I seriously doubt it. Xubuntu and Kubuntu's statuses are already on the fritz.
22) Warn the user if he attempts to remove critical software and prompt him for confirmation. - another APT-level feature.
23) Better organize the KMenu to sort applications alphabetically or categorically, automatically. - it already sorts alphabetically by default unless you have manually edited it. then it stops doing that afaik.
24) Port BulletProofX (or the like) to KDM. - WIP I think. But this needs to happen in KDE itself. We could always try though

25) Include better support for external screens and projectors. - WIP
26) Please merge the open/save dialogues. It seems that every application has its own version, some show icons and some don't. Some have a folder/file browser on the left, others have a pull down at the top. - please elaborate. All KDE apps use the same look and feel for Open/Save dialogs. This is on a toolkit level, and is not easy to change if you're talking about non-KDE apps.
27) During installation, provide the user with options as to what kind of installation he wants, wheter just a basic installation, a multimedia edition (LinuxMCE - possibly Huh), Kubuntu + extras (Wine, etc.), or the like. - er... remember, Canonical/Ubuntu can't official ship with stuff that isn't under their direct control. This means nothing from 3rd party repos/sources, and nothing from universe and multiverse.
28) Include a right-click menu option that allows the user to set an image as his desktop backgound. - possible in Konqueror. D3lphin's service menus are being reworked.
29) I'm pretty sure their working on this, but just in case, include much better wireless support, maybe even include a tool that will search for and install any needed Windows drivers not included by default with the ndiswrapper-modules (...if possible). - can't comment really.
30) Get the ALSA dudes to finish developement on 24bit soundcard support (I've never heard the full potential of my Audigy2 ZS Roll Eyes). - "Get the ALSA dudes"... yes the ALSA dudes are the people that should be asked

31) Maybe include a feature that allows the user to have multiple, individually configured application panels (instead of having them all configured the same). - Um.. you can already do that in KDE. Unless you mean something different
32) Include a script to periodically clean downloaded package files (such as in '/var/cache/apt/archives'). - that's already set in APT (I think every 30 days). I doesn't have to be a script, since it's a feature built into APT itself.
